Hope they put it in

Having officiated in Montana (with mercy rule) and now in Washington State (without mercy rule), I hope that WA adopts the mercy rule. I often get the "let's keep the clock moving" sense communicated either verbally or with body language from both coaches, administrators and the one knowledgeable fan in the crowd during blowouts.

I have a philosophical problem with "mercy rules".

Mercy is a virtue that can be exhibited voluntarily by the players and coaches. The best way to keep the clock running is for the team in the lead to run a motion or active 4 corners type offense with out attempting to score.

Having a rule making body impose "mercy" by "rule" is an inappropriate intrusion by the governing authority.

We can call it something else if it makes you feel better.

OK, How about "Enforced point spread reduction folly".

My real issue is the appearance that more and more people are willing to accept rules or laws to mandate "outcomes" in life as well as sport.

Philosophically, I'm with you; I just don't think this particular hill is all that big of a deal. And the pragmatic benefits of the rule are worth it; I've had too many blow outs where I've had to nip stuff in the bud. If this tool helps get rid of some of that stuff, good.

As someone else an esteemed member ROCKYROAD pointed out, too, schools in states with a shot clock can't use the stall offense.

There are lessons available for kids on the losing end of these blowouts, but they aren't any better if the score is 110-5 instead of 72-3.

I think in these cases the outcome has been decided and the "Mercy Rule" is in place to get us out of there before something worse than a 40 point drubbing happens.
