Legal dressed?

I am long time baseball coach and new basketball coach. I understand in baseball when the umpire asks "Are your players properly dressed and equipped?" but what is the purpose of asking in basketball? I understand jersey numbers, shirts tucked in but what exactly is NOT properly dressed and equipped in basketball?

Jewelry, hair control, and wrong colored T-shirts under the jerseys.

This question came in handy last night for me. Two of the players on one team had different medical clearances that the coach mentioned. One was a heart monitor and the other was a bandana (head covering).

The one in the back middle needs some serious hair control

I don't know, looks like it's under control, I think I'd vote for a cut!

To the OP -- it's so that if you have a problem with a player half-way through the game, you can ask the coach to take care of it. "Remember, coach, we already discussed this." I always include specifics at the lower levels, since these coaches are often quite inexperienced and need to be reminded again and again. Even so, I got out to toss the ball in a game last week and saw that the jumper (this was the third game I'd had with this very team this season!) had a stud in the upper part of her ear. Sheez...

What was the stud's name and was he in the book?

Was at a boys varsity game a couple weeks ago. A sub tried to enter with a long-sleeved shirt on under his jersey. It matched the jersey color, but he was told he couldn't play with it on. He ran - literally ran - into the locker room, and returned a couple of minutes later with the same shirt on, sans sleeves. You could tell it was the same shirt because it was obvious he had found a pair of dull scissors somewhere and quickly chopped them off.

Why wasn't he allowed to play? The shirt was legal before, then illegal if he really cut them off as it then had unhemmed edges.

So they sent him away with a perfectly legal shirt, and let him play with a shirt that had unevenly cut sleeves?

Wow.

Players may not participate while wearing jewelry. Religious medals or medical alert medals are not considered jewelry. A religious medal must be taped and worn under the uniform. A medical alert medal must be taped and may be visible. Headbands and wristbands must be white, black, beige, or a single solid color similar to the torso of the jersey. When wearing headbands and/or wristbands, all players must wear the same color and wear the items as intended. Only a single item may be worn on the head and/or on each wrist. Sweatbands must be worn below the elbow and be a maximum of four inches. A single headband, if worn, must be no wider than two inches. Rubber or cloth elastic bands may be used to control hair. Undershirts must be similar in color to the jersey and shall not have frayed or ragged edges. State associations may, on an individual basis, allow a player to participate while wearing a head covering, if it is worn for medical or religious reasons, provided that the covering is not abrasive, hard, or dangerous, and is attached in such a way that it is highly unlikely to come off during play. Written documentation should be available.
