3 this year... two on a coach for unsporting, one on a player for unsporting.

EDIT: these three were ones I've called, but had games where my partner has called one or two. Total for this combined this year is around 7 I believe.

First T of the season tonight to visiting HC.

JVB..physical game but the crew was consistent both ways.

Midpoint 2nd quarter I'm trail near benches when during deadball coach starts getting mouth. Says we need to call it both ways (foul count was 4-3), and wanted to know if I was going to stop calling cheap fouls.

WHACK.

He moaned the whole rest of the game but he was never loud or violated his seatbelt rule. One point I heard him say it was "all about us" referring to the officials and that's what I probably should have tossed him but didn't.

One point when his player was called for player-control (my call), he called timeout. After the TO, he goes, "Are we shooting free-throws?"

ME: No coach, it was player control against your team.

As I walk away I hear him say, "Sorry I asked."

I just kept walking. At that point he was hurting his team more than me throwing him out of the game and you really have to cross the line with me to get tossed.

This year 2 so far. Both for bad behavior by players.

1 in church league and 1 in a J.V. game.

My goal was zero, but I am still better than in the past. 1/2 of the season is over.
1 - taunting.

Should have called 2 more - 1 on a coach that my P had T'd up earlier, 1 on a player

3 so far - all on players with bad attitudes and a mouth to match.

Came close with a couple of coaches, but so far they've heeded the warnings and not crossed the line.

Like Rich said, no big deal, when they happen, they happen. There's nothing special about a T - it's just another kind of foul.......

Nothing special about a "T"?

When I call a "T" I have to write a report and send it into the state ( West Virginia ) If a coach gets 2 he has to give up 25% of his season's pay. He also sits for 2 games after the game he is ejected from.

A "T" is not just another foul. JMO. You get 5 fouls, but if the first 2 are "T's" you don't get the last 3. If you get 2 "T's" in one game you get to sit for 2 more games, player or coach.

"T's" are special. I have several referees in my association that have never given one. They consider themselves to be patient and understanding.....

External consequences are irrelevant to us. From the official's point of view calling a T is just like calling any other foul. If it's there, you call it, but we don't go looking for them.

And it's absurd for an official to set a goal regarding how few T's he will call during a season. Now goals to be a better communicator with coaches, to better sense when trouble is brewing and head it off, those are worthy goals.

Technicals in my opinion are a part of the game. Do you have to write up a hold, block, or push?

Our association is specific that for routine technical fouls there doesn't need to be a report- only if something is out of the ordinary.

Some one in another thread made reference to an NBA official saying offensive fouls being just like a technical fouls and need to be called more often.

If you ask me, more emphasis should be placed on intentional fouls than technical fouls.

Fourth, And Counting ...

I think that this post jinxed me. I have a very long fuse, and don't give a lot of technical fouls, but this is a record year for me.

Boys varsity game yesterday. No problems throughout game. Ball on the floor. A few players dive for the loose ball. A few hands hold onto the ball. My partner and I come both blow our whistles long and hard for a held ball and we both step toward the "scrum". Players get up and A1, who was in on the held ball, takes two hands, puts them on B1's chest, he was also in on the held ball, and pushes him back a few feet. No retaliation from B1. Technical foul. Team A coach sits A1 down for several minutes to cool off. On my way to the table I considered a flagrant foul for almost starting a fight, but since no words were exchanged, and since there was no retaliation, and since A1 didn't give me a hard time after the foul was charged, I decided to just go with a regular technical foul.

They happen when they happen......

Two from me - both on players. My P's have issued three on players. Seems to be down this year.....but, I don't care one way or another.

Coaches and I seem to get along ok......unless of course I let them get away with too much. Hmmmm

I'd post my total so far, but I don't know if Brad's server can handle a number that big.

OK, make that three.

B12 Rec League last night. TWEET! Green 12, hold. Wham! He slams the ball down on the court and way up in the air. WHACK!

As we're administering the T's I hear the coach say - "Son, you see that official there. He's a HS official. He's not gonna take any of that tonight."

Said with a sufficiently sarcastic tone, that would be another.

If he's actually warning his player, then we're good.

It wasn't sarcastic - but I get your point.

I'm the only state certified official in this league and try to help out once a week on Wed nights. The Coach is a fellow Rec League official when he's not coaching too - and we have worked together before.

He was just letting his guys know things might be a bit different tonight.....so, be careful.
