How About This One
Got a call from a buddy to tell me about this play from his daughter's JV game Friday night...
Opening jump (jumpers facing right direction). Tip to Visiting player who takes off toward Home basket (no backcourt violation or anything). V pulls up and shoots 3 pointer - gets hit in arm - ref blows whistle - ball goes in the Home team basket. Refs huddle up (3 person) and discuss it for a minute or so and then do this (get ready, cause it's pretty good): 1) Count the basket and give Home 3 points. ![]() 2)Put V shooter on the line to shoot 1 free throw - AT HOME TEAM'S BASKET!!! ![]() 3)V purposefully misses free throw and slams ball off backboard, and refs call a free throw violation and give Home the ball under their own basket!: ![]() Silly monkeys. |

That might just be the silliest administration of free throws I've ever heard. I could see how some might erroneously count the basket and from that I could maybe see them awarded free throws. But to make them shoot the free throws at the WRONG basket? Did they expect the visitors to spot the home team another point?

For those who wonder what should have happened here:
1. Since the "shooter" was not at her team's basket, there was no try, and the foul is thus a common foul. 2. Since it was a common foul, the ball was dead when the player was fouled -- no shot, so no points and no free throws. 3. The fouled team should get the ball for a throw-in. With any luck, they'll head the proper direction. ![]()

So, what you're saying is, other than those few errors, the crew got it right? Correct? ![]()

I'm going from the point where the foul was called, not challenging the call itself.

Bigger question - if you're on the home team, why bump the arm of someone who's aiming for your basket?

I chose not to add that to the current thread, since the foul prevented the basket from counting. I was focused on what the officials should have done in their situation.
