is this really a travel?

And yet another situation I just remembered about during a game over the weekend. I'm L, my partner is T in a BJV. Guard dribbles away from T towards me but still outside of 3-point line. Ball inadvertently bounces a little too high and player lets it go up to avoid being called for carrying. He's following the ball for a few steps until he's able to safely grab and control the ball. My partner whistles it dead and calls travel. Wouldn't this be an example of interrupted dribble as per NFHS 4-15-5?

Your thoughts please?
