scrimmage question

hello everyone this is my first year as an official and i wanted to say hi and i also have a quick question. last week i did a scrimmage. it went for about 2.5 hours and i was wondering if i get paid for scrimmages. reason i ask is before we left me and the other officials asked the coach if we needed to fill something out and he said he wasnt given anything. so this to me means makes me think i dont but i heard at some you do. anyway any help would be nice. thanks

I did one where the three varisty officials got paid, but I didn't because I volunteered to help myself by doing the scrimmage. The guys bought me pizza though afterwards.

Unfortunately your question does not have a standard answer. I did two HS scrimmages over the weekend. Friday's was for pay (G+B Varsity, each paid $20). Saturday's was purely for the love of the game (okay, not entirely, but there was no remuneration from the school). I did a college scrimmage a few weeks ago where we were "paid" a school logo t-shirt and ball cap.

To get an authoritative answer you'll need to direct your question to your local board/association leadership, or to whomever scheduled you to work the scrimmage.

Like said this is a very specific situation. In my area if and when you get paid is up to the school. There is no standard procedure or how you are paid can also vary so much that there is no real way to answer this question based on my experience. This is an issue between you and the school and maybe the assignor or association that gave you the game. All we can do is speculate, but it really is not going to help you in your situation other than sharing an experience.

I am glad we could help you get some work in. Good luck with the up coming season.

Peace

As others have said, it depends on where you're officiating. In our area, we don't get paid for our scrimmages.

For me, I treat it like a preseason camp and a necessary investment for the upcoming season. It gets my mind right and thinking hoops, gets me some instruction/critical review, wipes off the rust, and starts to get me back in basketball shape.

Thankfully, I don't have to travel far to do my games and our requirement is only three V scrimmages prior to the regular season - I usually do more (going on my fourth yr, I try to get as much work in with the vets as I can).

Good luck and have fun.

2.5 hours!!!!!!!!!!!

In Virginia a scrimmage can be no longer than six (6) 8-minute quarters.

Does this sound familiar - "Never Assume"? It's your responsibility to find out the specifics of working any assignment, scrimmage or otherwise, prior to accepting. As others have said, there's no standard policy for this.

Our scrimmages are two hours, we're required to work three, and the $50 goes to the association which uses it for training and observers.

Seems like that should violate some laws and regulations for independent contractors.

Scrimmages in my part of Ohio can go 3 hours if the coaches want, but thats rare. Pay is between $20-$30 depending on the school and level of play. The local BB associations dont have a minimum # of required games to do.
There are "foundation" games where, I believe, the host school gets a lump sum and the officials work for free..
