great history lesson
Wow. I never knew that the Tri-Cities, St. Louis, Atlanta Hawks actually started off as the Buffalo Bisons.
The Detroit Falcons, however, did not become the Detroit Pistons, the Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons did. The Falcons folded after a single season If you want to get technical, the original Boston Celtics franchise is now the L.A. Clippers and the present Celts are the former Buffalo Braves. Technically, John Y Brown moved his franchise to Boston, Irv Levin moved his franchise to San Diego and they swapped personnel and what we now call intellectual property. Bob McKinnon stayed with Brown and did not have to fill out a new W-4 when he became part of the Celtics, but Red Auerbach, a Celtic before and after the deal, did. There was also a player - player trade as part of the deal, and Billy Knight has also noted that, for the IRS, he had no change in his employer as a result of going to the Celtics, since the team he joined was the former Braves franchise which owned him prior all the swapping.
