Coaching was #5!

It's good they point out being an official is a good way to make some money. This will help some of the thinning ranks in some of the sports.

No surprise that coaching earns more than officiating. I look back to when I was coaching, and remember that my pay on a monthly basis during the season beat what I earned officiating. Of course, what they probably did for the article was take some averages, and you know what HS football coaches earn in Texas now.

But when you figure out the hourly wage I bet it's heavily in our favor. Coaches spend hours in the gym for practice and games, summer leagues and camps, and then more time outside the school preparing and staying up at night after a loss.

Agreed. I had a chance to coach a freshman boys team at a Class A school. I figured for the stipend, I would have made about $6/hr. for the season.

Instead, I'm a 50 YO rookie ref looking forward to CYO, rec, jr. high and possibly some freshman/jv contests.

True. Of course, it depends on how much one is paid. I was paid by the coach's salary listed in the teacher's bargaining agreement my first year at that school, even though I wasn't a teacher, just a behavior assistant working during the day, and a dorm parent as needed at night. The next year, since I was in a classification similar to the dorm parents, my boss (the dorm director) told the principal I needed to be paid at my hourly rate for supervising an after-school dorm activity. The prinicipal approved it, and boy did my paychecks get fat then because of the overtime.

I coached for 11 years, including 4 as a varsity head coach. I'd say at the peak that I spent 1,120 hours in a year on coaching (40/week for 15 weeks in-season, and 10/week rest of the year). I believe my peak salary was $5,200. So just under $5/hour!

From November 2008 to now, I've made $5,850 officiating. That's 203 games, so figure about 203 hours during games, 80 hours of travel (games in sets of 2 or 3, counting 1 hour round trip for each), 40 hours of prep time (laundering uniform, dressing, etc.), 40 hours of training/meetings including travel, and 20 hours of independent rules study, that's 383 hours of work, or just over $15/hour.

When you factor in the time put in, officiating pays much better than coaching. I coached baseball for a year and it's not even close. Plus, you don't have to deal with players, parents, or do field work.

Actually, I have worked games with no parents, players or coaches. That's because I tossed them all.
