FT violation or not
Does anyone know if the restrictions on players who are not in a marked lane space are the same in all codes during a FT?
Watching the (I know) NBA Playoffs I’m noticing players breaking the arc prior to the ball hitting the rim/backboard. Thanks! |

BTW - last weekend, in a spring league boys V game, A1 was at the line to shoot one. Coach A pulled all his other players over to the bench to talk with them so the only players on the lane were the four from team B. The shot hit the front of the rim, bounced directly back to A1 who put it back in. The team B players were just shaking their heads.

Rule 9-I-D
"Players not occupying lane spaces must remain on the court behind the three point line above the free throw line extended and may not be touching the line or the floor inside the line when the ball is released" Rim/backboard are irrelevant. |

In the NBA, everyone can enter the lane on the release except for the free throw shooter...
RULE NO. 9—FREE THROWS AND PENALTIES Section I—Positions and Violations b. The free throw shooter may not step over the plane of the free throw line until the ball touches the basket ring, backboard or the free throw ends. e. ...All players must remain on the court behind the three point line above the free throw line extended until the ball is released. |

Or sometimes sooner than that.
