Volunteering pays off

I spend my Saturdays during from October to March calling games as a volunteer for the local Boys and Girls Club. My 7th grade son (you know the type, jr. high today and graduate school tomorrow) regularly asks me during the season why I work for "free" on Saturdays when I could be getting paid at one of the other wreck league venues around town.

My answer to his question comes tonight...one of the board members who has always thanked me for helping out gave me 2 tickets to their big fundraiser dinner tonight and the guest speaker is Coach Roy Williams. Now, I'm no Tar Heels fan...but my son is, so I can't wait to pick him up from school this afternoon and tell him what we're doing tonight!

Maybe this will teach him a valuable lesson, but honestly...I'm not going to hold my breath!

He may not learn any good lesson in the short run, but I hope what he learns in the long run is that giving of oneself is always a good investment -- even if there are no good dinner tickets at the end!

Sounds great. I like to volunteer, but usually not at things I get paid to do. Perhaps it sounds strange, but I'd rather volunteer coach the special olympics (as I have done) than just go out there one day a year and ref it. I usually don't volunteer my professional services either -- or at least not intentionally! But I'll go help someone redo their bathroom in a pinch, although they may regret asking.

But will you go help pinch someone in their bathroom?

I think we all know how much that can hurt!
