Close call

2 man JV game last night. I am the trail as the clock winds down ending the
3rd quarter. A on a fast break and as the horn sounds, B trying to block lay up makes contact - a foul if the quarter had not ended - we have nothing...

Yeah or Neah...

Coach mad - player holding head - faking a little in my opinion.

No call - end of quarter - play on (if you're speaking of my P)

Why wasn't it a foul? Did the contact happen before the ball became dead?

Sounds like a foul to me based on the red.

I'm calling that. Especialy since it's just the end of the 3rd Quarter. Maybe a no call if you have overtime comming up anyway. Hopefully Mark wont read this. This also depends on the severity of the contact. Not much there, no call. Judo chopps the shooter calling it no matter the sit.

The foul happened just after the horn sounded to end the quarter.

Did the shooter still have the ball? Or, was the ball in flight on a try (or had the try ended)?

Was the ball released prior to the horn sounding?

If yes, then call the foul. If no, then as long as the contact was not excessive, you've got nothing. If no and the contact was excessive, you have contact during a dead ball which is not a common foul but a technical foul.

Per the Case Book:
ENDING A QUARTER OR EXTRA PERIOD
5.6 COMMENT A: The expiration of time for a quarter or extra period does not always cause the ball to become dead nor end the quarter or extra period. The ending of a quarter or extra period often lags both the expiration of time and the ball becoming dead. If there is no foul, it ends at the time the ball becomes dead. If the ball is in flight following a try or tap, this coincides with the expiration of playing time. If the ball is in flight following a try or tap and there is no foul, the quarter or extra period ends when the ball becomes dead. If there is a foul after time expires and before the ball becomes dead, the quarter or extra period ends after the resulting free throw(s). The free throw(s) is a part of that quarter or extra period and, if a tie is involved, the result of the free throw(s) will determine whether additional play is required.

Perhaps this might help you decide what should have happened here based on timing.

I'd even say that if the contact occurred prior to the horn, but the try was released afterwards, you should probably call the foul.

Shooter had released the ball just after the horn sounded - ball was in the air as contact occured

In that case, easy no-call. The ball is dead at this point. Tell the coach "the quarter had already ended," if he asks.

Mechanic of clearly waving off the shot makes this call much easier for the coach to accept, in my opinion. It appears as though you got the call correct, but without a clear indication that the horn sounded prior to the shot and foul, the coach was looking for the call.

In this case, would it be correct to wave off the shot (whether made or missed) and award two free throws with the lane cleared, to end the quarter?
