New free-throw alignment for players....

Hello,
I'm new to this site so I hope I'm doing this the right way.
Question: During a free-throw the second space from the basket (Not the low block anymore) is now occupied by the defense. The next space is for the offense, they may use this space or not. My question is: Can the defense occupy this space that the offense chooses not to occupy?

Actually to ask your question, you should start another thread.
The answer to your question is no.

Free-throw question earlier (I don't know how to start a new thread)

Where can I find this in the rule book? Defense can't take second free-throw lane space mentioned in an earlier post?
Thanks "Just another ref"!

The applicable rule is 8-1-4d and 8-1-4f. The answer to your question is yes, the defense may move down if they so wish.

Sorry, jar.

Another Myth Bites The Dust ...

On free throws, there is a maximum of two offensive players and four defensive players in the six marked lane spaces. The defense must be in the first marked lane spaces, above the neutral zone marks, on all free throws. The offense must not occupy the first marked lane spaces, above the neutral zone marks. The shooter and all the players in the designated lane spaces must wait until the ball hits rim or backboard before entering the lane. During a free throw, no opponent, including bench personnel, may disconcert the free thrower.

I can live with that.

I just realized how much easier this is when I have the book with me as opposed to flying blind.
