Note: I have passed on that call, maybe, 4 times, all told. I have always been okay to call a 10 sec backcourt violation with the ball on or over the backcourt.

Why it's hard for me.

• My visible count is practiced to be very close to one second, so it seems relatively fast.
• Time, score and situation can be applicable.
• I have never seen it called locally, although I would readily defend the call.
• I wonder if it is a flow interupter.

In twenty-seven years, I've probably called it about a half-dozen times. In most of these situations, I was probably already up to ten with my visible count, waited a short time to put air in my whistle to make sure that I didn't count too fast, expected an immediate dribble across the division line, or a quick, short pass across the division line, and instead got a long pass across the division line, so I blew the whistle. I'm willing to give the offensive team the benefit of the doubt, maybe I counted too fast, but at some point the defensive team has to be rewarded for great defense, so I'm not passing on a backcourt violation that's eleven, or almost twelve seconds, in real time, just because the ball is in the air.

I have at times gotten to 10 (or 8 in FIBA) blown the whistle just as a pass is being thrown into the frontcourt.

BUT, if the pass was already in flight as I got to 10, I would pass on that call.
Why grab the sh!tty end of the stick?

Whenever I think of the rule, I ask the same questions, ... except the first and second.

The violation is obvious only to the official doing the counting.
And the pass over the front court seems good nuff.

Alright, Mick. Just wondering as I knew there was some reasoning behind it.

You bring up a very interesting point about the count being +/- 1 second.
