Since we are talking about a length of the court shot here, it is likely done while time is expiring.

IF TIME EXPIRES while the ball is in flight, and then it hits the ground, and bounces into the basket, then the ball is dead and no points are scored. (Also- no points if it hits the ground, then time expires, then goes in. Either way- the ball becomes dead when time expires because it is not in flight on a try for goal.)

If for some reason this occured in the middle of the game with the clock running, then it is 2 points as everyone has stated.
Sounds fair enough.

Fair, smair. We must take every opportunity to bust balls around here.

It makes up for the professional demeanor we perpetually project on the court.

why are we talking about plays that have a 1 in a million chance of happening? Has anybody actually seen this happen?

It's not so much about those weird plays that might happen once in the careers of 4 people, but rather understanding the rules and how you can apply the basic definitions of the game in every case.

This example shows that officials need to know what a try is, when it ends, what a basket is, how they're scored, and how end-of-quarter restrictions could alter the rulings. I read once early in my career that a basketball official makes some sort of a decision every 3 seconds. Personally, I think it's more often than that.

No, not personally, but great officials have to be prepared for these screwball plays when they do happen even if its once in a million.

Years ago, I had a half-court heave shot attempt that hit a player in the head, bounced up and went through the basket...unfortunately my partner - who was T in two person - waved the shot off because time had expired, so we didn't get to have the argument of two vs. three or anything...and the poor 7th grade kid had a headache for nothing!

Because the principals and rules involved with figuring out whether to count it and for how much are important for all officials to know. Any further questions?

Thumbs up Thank for your input

I never had this shot but was watching an AAU game, my sons, when the coach posed this question to me told him I did not want to give him an answer off the top of my head when I could take the time to ask other opinions. My guess is this may have happened in one of his games and was trying to see someone elses opinion.
