Mich St / Indiana

Interesting timing issue to end the half going on (CBS). Clock shut off with 3.5 and Mich St continued their drive. First shot was missed, then the officials killed the play.

Ed Hightower got a stop watch out and timed the drive. They ended the half.

I don't understand how the clock can just shut off. I mean, when it happens in one of my games at some Jr Hi out in the burbs somewhere, it's just par for the course. But Indiana/Michigan State should have clocks that work. Seems ridiculous.

Good game for Mich St fans, though, eh? What's with Indiana?

More clock issues in the second half. I believe now it's just stopping on it's own.

Wow! What a steal!!! Unbelievable....

I thought Indiana might be able to get back into it, but it doesn't look like it.

Blame Precision Timing

I am a D-1 official scorer and co-ordinate the table for both MBB & WBB. We having issues we never had before precision timing. I think sometimes the clock will stop if one of the officials is breathing heavy

Is it a fairly recent occurance? Have there been any recent software upgrades done, or anything that would explain these recent issues?

Monty,
How do you go about becoming a scorekeeper at the collegiate level?

They put you in water and see if you float.

Seriously, though, I got into it by sending a letter to the AD at my undergrad institution. The better way to go about it is to e-mail the sports information director before the season starts. (At all the schools for which I've worked, the SID is the one who coordinated the table crew.) If they're interested, they'll probably have you work a few scrimmages and call you if needed to fill in that season.

Two pieces of advice, though.
1. Often, the table crew at a given place has been working together for a long period of time. To break in, you often need to wait for the right timing (i.e., someone retiring or moving away).
2. For mid-major D-I programs, when a game is televised, they need someone to act as TOC. Often, this will be one of the people who normally does clock/book, and you can get called to fill in there. My very first D-I game on the scorebook was nationally televised, and I had a dispute over the AP arrow with the home coach. (Definitely baptism by fire!)

If you want more info, SCal, feel free to message me through the board.

An official's voice can stop the clock too. It was recommended that all officials take the whistle out to do preventive officiating.

I was thinking that too. The NBA uses PTS, n'est pas? Have they had these problems? I don't recall seeing timing issues in any NBA game that I've seen on TV this season.

D-1 Scorer

I work at my undergraduate institution. I've always been involved in & around athletics. About 18 years ago I was asked to fill in at one of the table spots in an emergency. Since then I've been a part of the crew. When the previous MBB scorer retired, I was asked to take over. That's been about 14 years. I now co-ordinate the table for both MBB & WBB (I operate the shot clock for WBB)

I get a great seat and they pay me.

The best part is being able to stay involved with the basketball program. The other people at the tables are either university faculty or staff, with 1 "townie"

I don't think that the PTS is causing the scoreboards to shut off. Maybe shut off the clock if an official puts a little too much air into their whistlel. IMO, it's a scoreboard problem, not a PTS problem.
