illegal dribble

Tonight at a BV playoff I saw the following: A1 dribbled into the corner, then picked up the ball looking into the post. He wanted to make the entry pass, but never got the look he wanted. After several seconds, he gave up the idea, then turned and put the ball on the floor again.........and then remembered he had no dribble. He pushed the ball to the floor, then buried his face in both hands and mumbled something. Official whistled an illegal dribble violation. People yelled things like "A1, you dummy!" and "C'mon, A1, get your head in the game!" But nobody yelled "C'mon, ref, that's not a dribble! It never touched his hand again!"

I considered this to be at least a slight vindication, with regard to earlier discussions.

He doesn't have to touch it again. He has used his dribble and cannot START another one. One is started when the ball is intentionally pushed to the floor. I see what you are saying, but I think he violated when he pushed the ball to the floor (not a pass).

I heartily agree with you, but in earlier threads, virtually everyone else said otherwise.
