FT's for technical foul

Where are the players allowed to be during Freethrows when the lane is supposed to be cleared? Most of the time, I see officials making the players stand beyond the half-court line, but I cannot find a rules reference for this. Rules reference would help.

Sidenote: during a JV game a few weeks back, I saw an official mandate that the players not only stand behind half-court, but that they were not allowed to speak to their coach/bench. When the players tried to get closer to their bench to talk to their coach, the official threatened to call technical fouls on all the players and told them to stand in the center circle and not look towards the bench. Really weird situation.
