FT's for technical foul
Where are the players allowed to be during Freethrows when the lane is supposed to be cleared? Most of the time, I see officials making the players stand beyond the half-court line, but I cannot find a rules reference for this. Rules reference would help.
Sidenote: during a JV game a few weeks back, I saw an official mandate that the players not only stand behind half-court, but that they were not allowed to speak to their coach/bench. When the players tried to get closer to their bench to talk to their coach, the official threatened to call technical fouls on all the players and told them to stand in the center circle and not look towards the bench. Really weird situation. |
Lane cleared really just means outside the 3pt arc, and above the free throw line extended to the sidelines. Same as for players who are not on the lane during any other free throw.

Thanks, that's what I thought. do you have a rules reference for me?

What CLH said, and additionally there is absolutely no restriction on the coach coaching his players as long as the coach stays in the box and the players stay on the court.

This applies to all players when they may not occupy lane spaces. |
This is a current myth that everyone thinks you have to be behind the division line.
Was this an old rule - Mark? |

There was a game in our area over the weekend where a player got a T for doing a chin-up after a dunk. Then, while in the vicinity of the division line, same player commented very vocally about what a bull**** call it was, and was assessed his 2nd technical foul and ejected.
On a fanboy board that discusses various aspects of high school basketball in the state, this call came up, and one of the fan boys said, "You heard correctly about the techs. 1st for hanging on the rim, second for crossing the division line during the FTs." Where do they get this stuff? This was posted by someone who "allegedly" knows the game. |

Has this rule changed over the centuries? |

I think many are confused because the teams often huddle around their coach during a technical FT situation and thus it presents the impression that the are required to be beyond the division line. Although this only provides an explanation for why one of the teams is behind the division line. Just a thought.
