An interesting story.

A pretty decent read, I respect his efforts too. I wish more people would take the initiative to learn... or just shut up & watch the game, but what's wrong with this sentence?

As the referee, Brian will toss up the ball for the opening tap and my job is to hold my arm up until the ball becomes "live," after touching someone other than the two players involved in the opening tip.

I know Ed Clodfelter would've loved to proof read a copy before the article hitting the presses.

Thumbs up

I emailed the reporter telling him of his error. However, I was nice about it and I made sure I told him how much I enjoyed the article and his courage for doing this. I also invited him to check out this board.

Good article. Just the right amount of tongue in cheek humor needed!

I saw this on our local board's forum. I am sure he was happy to hear from you and hope that you told him the #1 rule in officiating.

Actually, I didn't. But I will now. Thanks for the memory jog (not to be confused with mammary jog).

It's amazing what you can find when you do a Google News Search on "basketball officiating"...

And what is even more amazing is that very few people try to improve things by doing what the author of the original author did. Go figure.

Oy - my biggest officiating pet peeve.

Billy, could you add this to your list of basketball rule myths?

Really. We all know the ball doesn't become live till a jumper catches it.

Frank, I'm on vacation, so my sarcasm meter isn't working at 100%. Please tell me you were kidding on this one.

If not, go read the "live ball, dead ball" section of this year's rulebook.

Mammary jog is what happens when I wear the wrong bra onto the floor. Ouch.

Mark,

I brought a little humor to bear because in my very first game this year, our crew missed the jumper catching the ball. So the rest of the season has to get better from there.
