Try to avoid an intentional foul

Is it ok to tell a coach to make sure his kids are "going for the ball" late in the game when they may be fouling the other team? I did this the other night and the coach gave me a strange look. Girls 8th grade BTW. Any comments are welcome.

Send a message via Yahoo to grunewar
As a ref and a coach and in younger REC league (instructional and for fun) I have called coaches in and told them near the end of a tight game, this before. Older leagues I don't. Coach will get the msg after the first intentional foul is called, the free throws are taken, and the ball goes back to the other team.

Is it OK for coaches to tell you how to officiate?

Different jobs. You officiate; let them coach.

I have no problems telling kids to go for the ball. Did it Friday night..although we still had an intentional foul.... It does help plenty of times though

But it *is* acceptable for a coach to warn an official about a specific play, for example.

I'll do it at the lower levels, but not in high school.

Yesterday in the varsity girls game, the coach of the team getting beat got tired of his team giving up layups, so he told his girls not to give up any more layups. "Grab her arm if you have to."

I was standing right in front of him when he said it; this was in the 2nd quarter. Even then, it was the third quarter before we actually got them for an intentional (most of the time, they couldn't even catch up to foul).

But not for a coach to warn an official about the other team's players or tactics.

Who would discourage a coach from certain antics if they overheard that coach suggesting some act that if seen by you, would be ruled flagrant?

I agree to nab the first call that you need to as intentional, but the moment that I think safety is a concern, the coach will get some of my preventative officiating.
