Actually, the conversation was a bit more awkward, and I wish it had gone as crisply and quickly as Juulie suggested.
Instead it was:
Coach: What's the call.
Me: Timeout Blue.
Coach: I didn't want a timeout, he hit the backboard. That's a T and you guys missed it.
Me: Coach, he was trying to block the shot, it's legal.
Coach: No, it's not.
Me: Coach, we're not getting into a rules debate.
Coach: Not in Colorado (referring to the actual rule, not the debate).
Me:
Coach: I'll take the timeout, 30.

Next thing I know (I'm now C heading back the other way), I look up and see most of the visiting bench up signaling for timeout. I call TO, and coach tells me he didn't ask for a TO, he was telling us we missed a technical foul. After a brief disagreement on the rule, he decided to take his TO after all.
If home team (B) is heading back the other way with the ball, you should have ignored visiting team's TO request. Legitimate bench tech.

It was one of those where they were up before home had the ball for the throwin. As a TO request, it needed to be granted. After I got the coach's explanation, I should have T'd the bench.
