One for the forum

Boys JV tonight. Partner gives the home team the ball for a spot throw in. Thrower moves just a bit and partner hits his whistle, signals travel, and announces that the player moved his pivot foot. I quickly trotted over and we discussed the situation and set things straight. So, give a point to this forum, as this was a situation discussed in a thread a week or two ago...and it actually sunk into my thick head!

However, as I'm feeling awefully good about myself, I was heading down court as the trail in two-person and saw the dribbler take a weird step while picking up his dribble. I immediately thought, oops. I put just enough air in my whistle to generate a soft, weak tweet while at the same time realized, oops. I quickly turned to the table, announced inadvertent whistle, and inbounded the ball as quickly as i possibly could. This knocked me back down to earth. However, I learned about handling inadvertent whistles on this forum, too, so chalk another one up!

That's 2-0 if you're keeping score.

There is a big misconception that this is a travel when indeed it is not a travel but a violation. I have talked to several of my partners and they have encountered the same situations. All you can do is give you partners the information to get the call correct. God forbid it happens in a tight game!!!

I don't see a violation here.

Not saying that this instance is a violation, but in other instances it has been called a travel when indeed it is not.

I have to agree with the other poster who clarified that your post does make it seem that you were saying that the player violated in this case when, in fact, he may not have left the designated-spot.

My first question to my parter was whether he moved behond three feet from the designated spot. Partner said he had not, so there wasn't a violation. Question from the visiting coach on why we were changing the call...quickly explained and we moved on.
