I've reffed and coached these games before - travel, foul, double dribble, held ball (AP throw-in), hey - no double teaming, hey - no back court pressure, repeat over, and over, and over.
Final score 8-7. Where's my snack? Good luck! |

Our kids rec league starts at 3rd grade. When I train refs to work this level, I make sure they give the kids some leeway, but still make calls. That's how kids learn what they should and shouldn't do. For the first few weeks of the season, we have the refs say a sentence or two to the kid on why something was a violation or a foul but only when it wasn't obvious and to keep it to a minimum, or else the games would take forever.
My advice to you is to write on a piece of paper, "Are the kids having fun?" and tape it to the back of your hand. Look at it every minute or so. That's the point. Kudos to you for doing this for your daughter and her friends.

Absolutely concur.
I also found it useful to concentrate on a FEW small things and get them right during the yr. This is the proper way to shoot, this is how you play defense, this is an inbounds play, here are two offensive plays, this is a walk, here is where you stand for foul shots - now go have fun!! Basic stuff. I see too much "over-teaching" at this young age and the kids don't understand, become confused, and DON't have fun! Ah, memories....... |

From an uneducated coaches perspective, I feel the teaching aspect of youth basketball should include a balance of drills teaching the most basic of basics and drills that incorporate the basics learned into something fun yet competitive. When I say youth basketball, I mean from the earliest of ages (2nd grade) all the way up to high school. The more advanced youngsters will be able to build more advanced skills on their foundation of basics, and hopefully by the time they are older, the "fun and competitive" aspect will come from their love for the game and, knowing that this type of skill development works, doing drills in itself becomes fun and competitive. Players of all ages need to be taught and reminded of the basics at all levels, and it is very empowering and confidence building for the youngsters to have something to rely on during the course of a season. For example, if a 2nd grader has trouble hitting the rim on a shot, loses control while dribbling, but has the supreme confidence that "coach taught me how to catch the ball and pivot, and if worse comes to worse all I have to do is keep pivoting and no one can take the ball from me", you will have a pivoting machine that will not turn the ball over, which will in turn help your player become a better passer or dribbler, etc... But if all that doesn't work and you player keeps travelling, just tell the ref they "have no eff-ing intergrity and they should be ashamed for cheating my girls and she got fouled, thats why she travelled!!!!" |

You guys are cracking me up...
CoachP...I keep redshirting him! Yeah...the basics are all these kids are gonna get from me. I've see the overcoaching guy out there before.....Bounce/Chest pass, triple threat position...how to shoot layups...We are gonna have some fun for sure. At this level in our local rec league, they shoot on 8' rims and shoot FTs from 10' with the 27.5 size ball. Each coach has to "ref" the game, so I have a decided advantage over my coaching counterpart! They can't guard in the B/C and can't steal the dribble unless it's in the lane and they have to play woMAN to woMAN D....score gets put back to ZERO at the end of each quarter.... I would like every girl on the team to score at least one basket this season.....I think that would go a long way to them having fun and wanting to continue playing. |

Back in 2000-2002 my grade school started an intramural 2nd & 3rd grade co-ed instructional league (which has since evolved), and I was asked to referee these games (although I was pretty much told to focus on reach-ins and be a little more patient with evrything else). My biggest piece of divce is to try to teach the kids about spacing. In our early years, we had 10 people all hovered around the ball which made things interestings (and very low scoring! )
