Can anyone answer a stupid question for me? A player from Team A is shooting 2 free throw's. Team B keeps a player out of the lane and back at Team B's basket, therefore Team A also does for basket protection. This leaves 4 players for Team B in the lane, with 3 and the shooter around the lane for Team A. Which team is allowed to occupy the remaining spot around the lane? In a game I was officiating, Team B took the spoT, was that ok?

Rule 8-1-3 b. A teammate of the free thrower is entitled to the next adjacent lane space on each side and to each other alternate position along each lane line.

That means there is room for four on each team. There is no restriction, in NF, on that defender taking that spot if it is not occuppied, however. If they both want it the shooting team gets it, otherwise anybody can have it.

The lowest space on either side (1) MUST be occupied by the opponent of the shooter.

The next space on each side (2) MAY be occupied by the teammates of the shooter. If they choose not to occupy that space, an opponent may occupy it.

The next space on each side (3) MAY be occupied by the opponent of the shooter. If they chose not to occupy that space, an opponent may occupy it.

The next space on each side (4) is identical to space (2).

Said another way. Each team "owns" certain slots. However, if they chose to not occupy the slot, it is open for the other team to use.

Except in late game situations where A is behind and will do anything for an offensive rebound or set up an all out press, for obvious reasons A is not likely to want that last space. One other exception is in younger ages where they can't throw far enough for B to fast break in this situation.
