The lowest space on either side (1) MUST be occupied by the opponent of the shooter.

The next space on each side (2) MAY be occupied by the teammates of the shooter. If they choose not to occupy that space, an opponent may occupy it.

The next space on each side (3) MAY be occupied by the opponent of the shooter. If they chose not to occupy that space, an opponent may occupy it.

The next space on each side (4) is identical to space (2).


Said another way. Each team "owns" certain slots. However, if they chose to not occupy the slot, it is open for the other team to use.
