Rule 8-1-3 b. A teammate of the free thrower is entitled to the next adjacent lane space on each side and to each other alternate position along each lane line.
That means there is room for four on each team. There is no restriction, in NF, on that defender taking that spot if it is not occuppied, however. If they both want it the shooting team gets it, otherwise anybody can have it.
