For all of us sox fans...
their magic number is 67 as of the all-star break (i.e. any combo of sox wins and nyy losses) to clinch the AL east. they have 75 games left, 15 of which are against Tampa Bay. The Sox are 108-48 all time vs. TB (win % of .692). Stats show they'll win ~10 of the 15 vs TB; with that said, their magic # is 57 with 65 games left. What does this mean? the AL east race is O-V-E-R!!! GO SOX! |

more stats for sox fans...
(sox have 75 games left, nyy has 77 left) if the sox win 10 of 15 vs TB and only go 32-28 the other 60 games, nyy would need to go 53-24 (29 games over .500) the 2nd half of the season (basically win almost 70% of their games). obviously i'll be more comfortable 2 months from now when they still have a 10 game lead, but still.... |

Watched the cable special "The Ghosts of Flatbush". It's clips were somewhat redundant but it told me something I didn't know about the Dodgers moving to La-la-land.
If Walter O'Malley could have convinced NY city planner Robert Moses to condemn some rundown buildings in Brooklyn, O'Malley would have built a new domed stadium and the Dodgers would not have moved. Moses wouldn't do it - not because the buildings didn't qualify - but because he wanted to see a new stadium built in Queens instead. Ironically, a few years after the move, Shea Stadium was built right where Moses wanted it. Oh yeah - the special had some great insights into the hiring of Jackie Robinson. Apparently Branch Rickey wanted him and O'Malley would have been just as happy to not do it!

BTW, it's interesting to note the proposed site of O'Malley's Brooklyn stadium is about where the proposed new arena for the Nets will be, owned by real estate developer Bruce Ratner. This project includes both high and low income housing along with the arena.
