Something's been bugging me since I heard him say it. But, has anyone else been annoyed by Selig saying his effort to watch Bonds has been "Herculean?"
Really? Herculean? He's traveling around watching freaking baseball games. Oh, he must be so tired. |

Well over the weekend I took a trip to Yankees Stadium to take my Dad to his first game there. It was a good one to go see. ARod's 500th, Yankees win, and a game with lots of runs. Turns out, a man sitting behind us for whatever reason didn't have a seat with his wife/girlfriend. So I'm assuming he went out to where she was every now and then......turns out she was left field and he ended up catching #500 and a check for 100G. Enjoyable weekend, time to start thinking officiating again!

Sox avoid the sweep, and Yanks are on the other side of one of those lopsided scores. Six games is a little closer than I'd like, obviously, but at least they're still in front. Lester's start was disappointing, but the offense finally woke up a little for the Sox.
Dodgers have been shut out three straight games, have lost 4 of 5 and 15 of 19. That's not a good stretch. Wonder how Grady Little's feeling lately. |

I've got another question as well, completely unrelated to the Phillies. Did anyone see the Mariners game last night? We had a question about the play where the first baseman apparently didn't catch the ball, but the runner was ruled out. It was at the end of an inning. Can anyone explain the rule that was used for that out? |

Take yer baseball rules question over to them. (Let me know what they say when you get your answer btw, I didn't see the game but can think of a number of ways this might happen.) |
2nd inning today vs. Oakland.
Mags led off with a homerun. 2nd at bat in the 2nd, mags hit a 3-run homer. Fun. :) |

He doesn't seem to be making the adjustment to set-up guy very well, does he? 4 game lead? Sox have been playing .500 ball over the last 50 games; Yankees have just been on fire. Seems like they're scoring 10 runs per game over the last couple weeks. Almost doesn't matter if you have a crappy pitching staff if your offense is doing that. There's still 6 games left for the Sox and Yanks. Those two series will decide it, I think. I heard that the Tigers have the most losses since the All-Star break in the AL. But that's small consolation for Sox fans. Maybe Mick and I can just commiserate. |

Sox beat up on Tampa Bay. They now lead the AL in shut outs. Yankees lost, dropping a game to the Sox. So that's good.
I saw a great sign at the Yankee game, tho. It had the Yankee logo in a car mirror and said, "Warning, Boston fans, objects may be closer than they appear." Kind of clever. And how about this guy from Arizona, Brandon Webb? Friday night, he pitched his third straight shut-out. He's thrown 42 consecutive scoreless innings. He's 18 innings away from breaking Orel Hershiser's record. When a reporter informed of this, Webb responded, "Just two more shutouts? Oh, I should have that no problem. It's in the back pocket," while rolling his eyes. |

And I see that Wiley Mo Pena of Washington just homered for the second straight game. Love story of the week......
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7141730 The young lad arranges with the Jumbotron operator at the Astros game last night to show him getting down on his knees and proposing to his honey. His honey sez "f**k you" and dumps her popcorn on his head before stomping up the aisle and out of the stadium. It's kinda nice to read a sports story these days with a happy ending, isn't it? |

The Baltimore pitching staff went from 7th in the league in team ERA to 11th, in one night! The Rangers had more runs than outs in the game. And, finally, just to show how screwy stat rules are, Texas pitcher Wes Littleton earned a save in that game. I can just picture him sitting with his grandkids someday telling them about his close call... |
Hey, Mick, what's the story on Craig Monroe? I saw the Tigers traded him to the Cubs today; I know his numbers were down a little from last year, but is it injuries, or just the need for a change of scenery? I was curious, because I thought the Cubs had been trying to get rid of an outfielder or two (Jones), but now they pick up another, even with Soriano ready to come off the DL in a week or so, and the others more than holding their own.

I had an answering post disappear. So sorry ! Trying again here. C-Mo, excellent LF or CF, has been a solid person and good teammate in Detroit. According to various readings from teammates, he tends to over-think his funks and does not, despite suggestions from teammates and coaches, just keep playing and using his natural athletic abilities to slide over the bumps. Because the the Tigers were getting desperate, they called up Cameron Maybin, 20 yr.-old CF to take his place. A month ago, or so, the Tiger bigwigs said Maybin wasn't ready, ...but there he is in left field. He looks wide-eyed and excited and scared and anxious. But he's a ball player. Coming up to the trading deadline, every offer to Detroit (in the last few weeks) requested Maybin and pitcher Jair Jurrjens, both double-A players. Well, Detroit not only kept them both, they brought both of them up to the club. There ya go. Cubs got a solid player and a good man. His mom's name is Marilyn. |

I was going to guess twinkies.
|
Did you read this part?:
"The much-maligned muskie (the Big Bad Wolf to your Little Red Riding Hood of the fish world), is the biggest, baddest, most reclusive and elusive freshwater fish there is. You know how the dog days of summer are just about over? They last all season for muskies, who prowl shoreline shallows picking off small dogs, ducks and other critters that stray too close to the water. If you’ve ever watched a baby duckling that lags too far behind its mother and disappear without as much as a peep or a splash, you know what I’m talking about. They’ll also grab a merganser, munch a mallard, and chomp a red-winged blackbird off a cattail a couple of feet above the water. Part of Wisconsin’s charm and culture is cultivating these horror stories (Esox fables?) about big muskies snapping poodles out of boats while they’re leaning over, admiring their reflection in the water. Some time ago, a guy in Hayward allegedly caught a big muskie when he dangled his foot in the water over the side of his boat, and got bit. If you ask me, he was asking for it. And so was that little dog, too." Go ahead - dangle that twinkie over the side of the boat. I dare 'ya. |
Here's just another unrelated story. I was at a twi-night doubleheader at Comiskey Park when I was a kid to see the Tigers play the White Sox. Although he also played for the Sox later, at this time Norm Cash was the Tiger's first baseman. One of the Sox hit a foul pop-up over near the 1st base dugout. Cash tried to reach over the box seats to catch it but some fan threw a beer in his face. Cash jumped the short fence and went after the fan. Unfortunately for Cash, the guy was huge and gave him a forearm right across the throat. It took a whole bunch of security guards to restrain the guy and eject him. Cash had to leave the game and missed the second game that night.
That's what I call fan support. :p Here's a fun question for everyone - what do you think was the "coolest" baseball player name of all time. Of course for football, it had to be "Fair Hooker". My submission is "Mordecai 3-finger Brown". Nicknames count. |
Coco Crisp may be my all time favorite name.

First game of the double-header is in the books. Red Sox win 11-3. Timlin pitches 2 scoreless innings of relief (which should earn him a couple days off, according to Jerry Remy  ) and Beckett picks up his 16th win of the season, which leads the bigs.
Clemens pitches tonight in Detroit. Detroit needs to win some games, so they're going to be tough. |
