Garland looked pretty good through 7, except for one bad inning in the 4th. He came out for the 8th and looked done, then the bullpen imploded. Okajima did his usual great job and Timlin looked pretty good for the BoSox. Chicago had a couple guys on against Timlin, but couldn't do anything with them.

I hope Papelbon has a chance for the save tonight. :)

Unfortunately, this season is a bust for my White Sox. The only high point is the performance of Bobby Jenks. Of course that means the Sox will probably trade him. :(

Not likely. It's 9-1 in favor of the Red Sox in the 5th. If Schill can hold it together for a little while longer, we shouldn't need a closer tonight (he said, tempting fate).

In Jacksonville, new daddy Tom Brady is looking pretty good, too. Patriots are up 17-7, and would be pitching a shut-out if not for one long play that caught the defense sleeping at the end of the first half.

I did catch the replay of Posada being tossed. He was one mad l'il catcher person.

From usatoday.com -
Carlos Guillen's three-run homer lifted Detroit to a 9-6 win over the New York Yankees on Saturday morning.
''First time I hit one at 3:30 in the morning,'' Guillen said. ''Long day for us.''

Iirc, the decision as to whether the game is gonna start or not is made by the home team management. Iow, it was up to Dee-troit to decide to wait the 4 hours. The umps can't make any decision either way until after they've seen a pitch. Correct?

As you said, the home team management has the authority to delay or postpone [due to weather or unfit field] until that authority is given to the umpires via handing the home team's line-up card to the plate umpire [in the case of last night's game (4.01d)]. There are other ways to get the home teams authority that did not apply last night.

ChuckElias Sat Aug 25, 2007 06:32pm

Heck of a weekend so far. 11-3. 10-1 and 14-2 for the good guys. Nice of Chicago to throw batting practice for us. Wake gets his 16th win, tying Beckett for the MLB lead. The lead in the East is back up to 7 games. Yanks are off to a 1st inning lead, tho. Go Tiggers!!

(All my good feelings vanished when I saw that Tavarez is slated for tomorrow's start :( )

Middle of the night for you is when, 10 pm?

JugglingReferee Sat Aug 25, 2007 11:35pm

Saw a neat timing play (please correct me if that term in incorrect) between Toronto and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim where the runner heading home (originally R2?) seemed to slow up a bit and another runner was gunned out at third via a tag play.

They showed the replay up here in a split screen and the out occurred first, ending the inning (3rd out).

Officials were right on top of it!

The new owners of the AAA PCL Portland Beavers want to change the team's nickname, even though the team has been the Beavers for over 100 years. One of the suggestions is the "Wet Sox"!

Boston beats the White Sox again, 11-1. They outscored Chicago 46-7! Meanwhile, the Yankees lost again :) pushing the Sox' division lead to 7.5 games. Should be a good set this week in the Bronx. Only 3 games, but it's going to help somebody's confidence going into September.

Oh, thanks for playing, but that was not the answer we were looking for! The New International Version, King James Version (least reliable), New King James Version and the New American Standard all say Jonah was swallowed by a "great fish".

You were perhaps confused by the story of Pinocchio, who was indeed swallowed by a whale.

You probably also think that Noah took 2 of every animal into the ark with him. ;)

Oh, thank YOU for playing, but the Hebrew term 'dahg', commonly translated as 'fish', is the generic term of a desert people for swimming sea creatures.

Ancient cultures generally did not distinguish in thought or concept between mammalian and non-mammalian sea creatures, and so the use of the term 'dahg' would not exclude a whale.

Jerome's vulgate (early 5th century Latin translation) introduces the term 'cetus' in this context, from which word the study of whales (cetology) derives its name.

Although I don't believe the story, it is more plausible to claim that an individual was swallowed whole by a whale rather than a shark.

You are probably confused: the story of Pinocchio is fiction, so no one was indeed swallowed by a whale (though Pinocchio was in the story). :p

Although I did not know the actual Hebrew word (I took Greek, but no Hebrew), I did know that "fish" is a generic term. I also believe that these texts are not to be treated as scientific treatises, so literal interpretation of any of them is likely to be misleading (IMHO). And although "fish" may not rule out a whale, too many modern people who think they know the biblical texts are certain that Jonah is said to be swallowed by a whale, which is simply not true. Just as they are "certain" that all the animals that boarded Noah's ark came in pairs.

(Jerome's contribution is interesting, but from your description, it sounds like he inserted his own interpretation. I'm woefully ignorant about anything having to do with the Vulgate, so I could be completely off-base. I'm just going by your description of "introducing" the new term.)

I think that you're right about Jerome, and that he offered a more plausible reading of the Hebrew text of Jonah--one abandoned by later translators in favor of 'fish' with its misleading taxonomic connotations.

Can we get back to baseball now? The Indians have several one-run games against the Twins to win over the next few days...

Dan_ref Mon Aug 27, 2007 12:42pm

So we're arguing whether the report of a human being swallowed whole by a 'fish' and escaping to tell the story is more accurate if the 'fish' is a whale or some other non-mammal sea creature.

OK then...

You don't find that believable? Well, how about the earth stopping its rotation so that the sun stays stationary in the sky so the "good guys" can finish off the battle? Or how about the "good guys" winning a battle as long as the leader holds his arms up in prayer? :D

Anyway, as rare as inside-the-park HR's are, there were two of them yesterday - one by Granderson of the Tigers, and one by Derrek Lee of the Cubs. I wonder if those Elias people have figured out how many times that has happened previously?

I also saw it was Lee's second of his career; the first happened back in 2003 against Jason Marquis when he was with Atlanta. And Marquis was pitching for the Cubs this time. ...Hmm...

I didn't get a chance to see any of the games, but that was my impression. If this keeps up, I would think Ozzie could be wearing out his welcome in Chicago pretty quickly.

You know, it's really not his fault if no one can pitch anymore. It's not as if he's making poor game situation decisions. When the other team scores 10 or 12 runs per game regardless of who you put on the mound, there's not much you can do.

True.

But I've gotten the impression that some players are just "going through the motions" at this point, and that is definitely a manager's problem. Then there's Ozzie being Ozzie, which can be laughed off when the team is doing well, but rubs more people the wrong way when the team doesn't do well.

It usually isn't the manager's fault when a team doesn't do well, but the manager is usually the first to go.

Along with the GM, apparently, in Houston. Just two years after the Astros were in the World Series against the White Sox, manager Phil Garner, and GM Tim Purpura were fired today.

Should we do a poll as to which manager will be fired next? (Someone else may need to set it up; I've done my share of polls...)

Fine. Hey, anybody notice that the Tigers are winning 7-0 in the fourth inning over the Yankees? Polanco just hit a shot off of some string bean in a Yankee uniform. Edwar Ramirez has a career total of 9.2 innings pitched in 7 appearances before tonight. He's listed at 6'3" and 150 pounds!!

Has there been a worse "big game" pitcher than Mike Mussina over the last 3 or 4 years? Seems like he has this reputation as one of those guys you want on the mound if you had to win one game. But he always seems shaky in those games.

If the score holds, the Yanks will drop to 8 games behind the Sox and the Tigers will pull within 2 games of Cleveland. Go Tiggers!

Tonight's AL West game should be a real good one, too. M's versus Angels. the pitching matchup is Batista (13-9) vs. Lackey (15-8). Too bad I'll be asleep by the time it starts.

So, did the Cardinals enjoy their day in second place?

M&M Guy Thu Aug 30, 2007 09:30am

Ok, here's one of them "huh!" statistics I heard the other night. While listening to the Cubs game, the announcers mentioned that on that date a few years back, one of the Cub outfielders made an unassisted double play. Runner on second takes off (I don't know if it was a hit-and-run, or if they thought there was 2 outs), and a sinking line drive was hit out towards shallow left center. The left fielder comes running in, makes the catch, and just continues on running towards second to step on the base for the double play. I thought that was very unusual that an outfielder gets a chance to make an unassisted double play. Infielders do it all the time. Outfielders are involved with many "catch and throw" double plays, but not necessarily unassisted. Until I heard the stat: in the majors, since 1990, it's happened 7 times!

Huh!

Since stats have been kept, there have been 13 unassisted triple plays. None, however, by an outfielder. There was another one credited in 1878 but under today's scoring rules, it would have only been an unassisted double play.

FWIW - Bill Wambsganss had his in the same World Series game in which Elmer Smith hit the first grand slam in Series history (Oct. 10, 1920). I know, I was there. ;)

BTW - the first unassisted triple play in NL history was made Oct. 6, 1923 by a Boston Braves shortstop named Ernie Padgett. We're related on my uncle Ernie the Muppet's side. Here he is with his live-in boyfirend, Bert (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Geeze, looks like Bert broke up with Cookie Monster. That's too bad, it was always nice to see the twinkle in Bert's eye when Cookie Monster said "Me want cookie now".

Ernie had Bert first. That darn Cookie Monster is nothing more than a home wrecker.

Great baseball thread, huh?

Typo? Should be <b>"twinkie"</b>? Twinkie in Bert's eye(not that there's anything the matter with that)?

Don't get me started on the cream filling. Brad will lock this up faster than you can say "Billy Packer's an idiot".

Sox look like they're on their way to getting swept in NY. Big play in the 7th. Youkalis called out for leaving the base path. I don't know the rule well enough to argue with the call, so I have to assume that they got it right. The NESN guys pointed out that it looked like Youk didn't leave the base path until after he'd gotten past A-Rod.

Instead of 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, it was man on 2nd with 2 outs. That's a game changing call. Ouch. :(

mbyron Thu Aug 30, 2007 02:35pm

There's a thread on it over in Baseball:
link to the thread

By rule, a runner's basepath is a direct line from wherever he is to the base he's trying to acquire. Once the defense begins to play on a runner, he must remain within 3 feet of that basepath. Should he deviate, the runner is out (the ball is not dead, so other runners may advance).

Presumably, after their little huddle the crew in the Yankees-Sox game determined that Youk was outside the allowable 3 feet. This call can be made retroactively, and runners placed accordingly.

Notice that the rule has nothing to do with a direct line between the bases.

Well, those Red Sox sure do know how to get swept without embarrassing themselves. 3 very nice losses, they can even blame the shut-out in the last game to an unusual ump-call.

Nice going.

I might just have to start posting purposeful errors just to desensitize Mr. Grammar Guy.

Just remember, I'm not Mr. Grammar Guy. I don't play one on TV, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. But it is kinda fun to hear his wittle 'ol head explode...

I'm just giddy that, no matter what happens tonight, my Cubbies will still be in first place.

And they no longer have Kyle Farnsworth on the roster. :D

Hey, it's hard to pitch when you've got both hands firmly around your own neck.

I tell 'ya, it's been all downhill since the Shania Twain incident.

So, what's the scoop with Moose? Is he done for good? Or just done in NY?

He'll get another start in a week or two, no matter how the young kid-Kennedy- coming up does on Saturday. They owe him that. Personally, methinks that he's reached his past-due date. Iirc, he's got another year on his contract at around 12 mil though. Silly monkeys.

Speaking of the Indians: their 6th win in a row came last night on a bases-loaded, walk-off walk. In the inning they had a hit, a hit batter, and two walks. Thank you, Rick White.

Now, 6 games with the White Sox and the Twins. Can the Tigers keep up? Inquiring minds want to know...

Bombederman finally got a win.
Rogers may try again.
Verlander is concentrating better
Robertson is stronger.
Zumaya seems good

The schedule looks easier for the Tigers, than for the Indians.
Seattle lookes like they are crumbling.
The Yankees are the Yankees.

The Tigers need help to win the division. The wildcard slot is lost.
