And it's only a few hundred miles from Boring, Oregon (again - a real town). And please, no wise cracks about thinking all the towns in Oregon are boring - we've heard them all. Besides, Oregon isn't boring, it's just wet. If you really want a fun place to go, try here:

If they keep losing to the A's, sweeping the Indians won't do the trick. 5.5 games back this morning... :D

You gotta feel sorry for the White Sox: beating the Indians 5-2 with 2 outs in the bottom of the eighth. Next thing you know, they've given up six runs and then gone 1-2-3 in the ninth to lose. It's their season in microcosm.

I don't think age has anything to do with it. They're both sports psychology terms.

BIRG = basking in reflected glory.
CORF = cutting off reflected failure.

Fans often show this when talking about their favorite teams. Last night, O's fans might have said "We won 9-8!" while Sox fans might have said "They lost 8-9."

Appalachian State is not eligible to receive votes in the AP Top 25 poll because the school is not in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

This seems to be the same AP article, but there are a couple of small differences.

What a silly rule. If they are one of the top 25 teams in the country, then who cares what division they play in?

BTW, this must be a new rule as I know of several teams in years past that earned a top 25 ranking while playing at the 1-AA level.

Years ago, Portland State (Div 1-AA at the time) had an incredible team. In fact, they won one game 103-6! Neil Lomax was the QB. I would have loved to have seen them in a major bowl that year.

Are we still in the baseball thread?

What does the validity of that statement have to do with mine?

It happens quite frequently that one ranked team does not face any ranked opponents during a season just because of its schedule and conference affiliation.

The sad fact is that they will still get votes. It would be surprising, but they might even retain a top 25 ranking. Name recognition and program history have too much to do with the NCAA rankings.

This game is a prime example of why I believe that no team should be eligible to receive top 25 votes until after it has completed its third game of the season.

Yo, Chuck!
Buchholz pitches no-hitter

Boston's Clay Buchholz, who wasn't even in the major leagues two weeks ago, became the 20th rookie to throw a no-hitter in baseball history Saturday night when he beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-0 at Fenway Park.

rsox34 Sat Sep 01, 2007 09:32pm

Buchholz was "wicked awesome" as the say here in New England

Buchholz was one calm and collected pitcher. The Red Sox needed him to step up and pitch and Clay did his best. Hopefully the Sox will use this game as a springboard to some consecutive wins.

I didn't mean to imply that the two were mutually exclusive. Intuitively, I would have expected a previous upset of a ranked team to be more likely than a 1-AA team finding itself being ranked (as opposed to merely garnering some votes for the top 25).

I'm curious to see who the previously ranked 1AA teams are. I'll have to do some research.

I've been dying to get in here and post, but I turned the computer off early last night to watch the game with my dad, and then I couldn't get into the forum this morning. Anyway. . .

Not only was he still the minors two weeks ago, but he wasn't even supposed to start last night. Wakefield was scheduled to pitch but his back was bothering him. So Clay didn't even know he was pitching until yesterday afternoon, I think.

Coco Crisp made a couple of very good running catches in center field to keep the no-no going and Dustin Pedroia made an absolutely unbelievable diving stop behind second base in the top of the seventh to save the night. He was somehow able to get up and barely throw out Tejada, who stupidly dove into first base.

Buchholz also made a fine defensive play on a sharp bouncer right back to the mound. But his use of multiple pitches at any point in the count was really what kept the Orioles at bay, I think. He threw a fastball, curveball, slider, and change-up and used them all perfectly. (Last pitch of the game was a curve or change-up -- I couldn't tell for sure -- and Joe West took so long to ring it up that I thought he called it a ball. I yelled at the TV and then West gave the signal and Tek jumped out of his crouch.)

The only disappointment of the whole night is that nobody gave him a cream pie to the face during his post-game interview. Poor kid had a hard enough time talking, though. He just had no idea what to say. He could've used a little coaching from Crash Davis for the interview.

First Red Sox rookie to throw a no-hitter. Only the third pitcher ever to throw one in his first or second career start. Veritek has caught Boston's last three no-hitters (Nomo @ Balt, Lowe @ Tampa Bay, Buchholz vs. Balt). The only player to catch more no-hitters than Veritek was a guy who played for the White Sox in the late teens and early 1920's.

Buchholz was drafted by the Red Sox using the draft pick they received as compensation from the Mets when NY signed Pedro as a free agent.

Great night!

ChuckElias Sun Sep 02, 2007 09:18am

I was real glad to see you guys break out of that losing streak, especially knocking Roger out after only 4 innings. Now if the Sox could just take advantage of it. They're trying to give away the game after leading 10-1. It's now 13-9.

I'm having a hard time. Probably have to find a website that lists every poll for each year and pick out which teams might have been 1-aa at the time. I agree about 1-AA. Some pretty good NFL players have come from 1-AA.

Neil Lomax comes to mind. He was the QB when Portland State beat Delaware State 103-6. After the game, the Portland State baseball coach said (with the press listening) "I wonder if Delaware State has a baseball team?"

BTW - at the time, Darryl "Mouse" Davis was PSU's head coach and he ran the "run and shoot" offense. The team, whose official nickname is "Vikings", were jokingly called the "Fighting Mice" in those days.

"The final fallout from a disastrous opening weekend for Michigan came Tuesday, when the Wolverines dropped all the way out of The Associated Press Top 25, an unprecedented fall from No. 5 to unranked.
Since the AP poll expanded to 25 teams in 1989, no team has taken a bigger tumble in one week.
Michigan also fell from No. 5 to out of the USA Today coaches' Top 25.

However, twenty-two of the 60 head coaches that vote in the poll kept Michigan in the top 25. One voted the Wolverines as high as No. 10.But it was not enough to keep Michigan out of the "others receiving votes" category between Clemson and Miami."

Kurt Warner and Bryce Paup come to mind for me, both former Northern Iowa Panthers who had pro-bowl NFL careers.

Chuck is not an Indians fan.
Lord Byron is not a Red Sox fan.
It is what it is.

Factoid:

In the last 10 games the Tigers are 5 W - 5 L
Hits -> Tigers: 110 Opponents: 73
Runs -> Tigers: 49 Opponents: 34
LOB -> Tigers: 91 Opponents: 61

I saw where they just pounded the White Sox last night.

(Well, ok, it was 2-1 in extra innings.)

Do they have any games left against the Evil Empire?

No. After this weekend, everybody pretty much plays teams from their own division.

No, but, although each game is so important to the Tigers, they do play Seattle 3 times and @ Cleveland 3 times.

I hope A-Rod get's better (in about 3 weeks).

Not necessarily - the Cubs play @FL for 3 games the last week of Sept.

That exceptional case falls within the scope of JR's "pretty much."

I'd be very careful in using "JR" and "pretty" in the same sentence.

At least one group has come to their senses and corrected an injustice.

App. State Eligible For Div. 1 AP Top 25 Poll

(AP) After pulling off one of the greatest upsets in college football history, Appalachian State is still shaking things up.

The Associated Press said Thursday that lower-division schools -- that means you, Mountaineers -- are now eligible for its 71-year-old poll.

"It's great they opened the door," Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore said. "Certainly we're not going to be the No. 1 team in the country.

We know that. We're not even going to be in the top 10.

But if you have a win over a nice football team, I like that it's not out of the realm of possibility for a school like us to be
one of the top 20 or 25 teams in the country."

Several AP voters expressed interest in putting Appalachian State on their ballots after a shocking 34-32 upset at then-No. 5 Michigan last weekend.

But the poll guidelines, which mirrored the coaches' rankings conducted by USA Today, limited eligibility to teams competing in the former NCAA Division I-A, now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Mountaineers compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, known before this season as Division I-AA.

The AP decided to make the change because schools that show they can compete with big-time teams on the field should have a chance to be recognized with them in the top 25, Sports Editor Terry Taylor said.

So? Have you found any confirmation that a 1-AA team has evern been ranked in the 1-A poll before?

I know that it is true. I can tell you for a fact that Nevada did it in 1986. :)

They did not keep the ranking for the final poll though as they lost in the 1-AA semifinals to Georgia Southern 48-38 and finished 13-1.
