The longest home run I ever saw hit in person was back when I was a kid playing in our city's version of Little League (a Park District league). I was 11 years old and Pete Ward, then with the White Sox, came to our field to put on a clinic. This was in Chicago Heights, where I grew up (physically, not mentally). He hit a ball not only completely out of our park (not too great a feat, actually), but it landed across the highway in the parking lot of a gas station down the road. Later that day, one of the dads (who was in construction) went out and measured it with a tape. He measured it went just over 470 on the fly. BTW - Ward hit it off a relatively slow pitch from one of our teenage coaches. I'll never forget that.

btw, I saw Reggie Jackson hit a line drive into the back of the bleachers at Yankee Stadium.

Most impressive HR I ever saw.

Hargrove's out as manager in Seattle. Wow. Just when they're starting to get hot. Just walking away. That's hard to figure. Jerry Narron is no longer the Reds' manager, although not by his own choice.

I'm starting to get a little frustrated with the Sox offense lately. Manny and Papi are just not getting anything done when it counts. Two men on with two outs and the two of them are useless lately. :( Hope they turn it on after the break. Maybe Manny just needs to recharge his batteries in the Dominican for a few days.

Sox and Yankees both lost yesterday. In fact, the whole AL East lost yesterday. As a division, the AL East is on a 16 game losing streak. The Sox don't even have the best record in the bigs anymore. That's the Angels. Boston's only a half game better than the Indians right now. Not good times.

Manny is supposed to be going to the All-Star game in Frisco. Wonder what excuse he's gonna use this year to get out of it? :D And Papi got voted in at 1B. He's played ...what?.....2 or 3 games there this year. He's getting ready to start there though; he's having the cracks in his glove welded.

How about this? The White Sox won the series 2 years ago. They had 6 or 7 on the AL All-Star team last year. This year? One! And Jenks was a manager's choice. And St. Louis won the World Series last year. They have <b>one</b> player on this year's NL All-Star team--Pujols. And he isn't a starter. Wierd.

Go Phillies !

The Philadelphia Phillies, who played their first game in 1883, are approaching a milestone that speaks of futility and longevity: With 9,995 losses, they are on the verge of becoming the first pro sports franchise to record 10,000 losses. Behind them are the Atlanta Braves (9,675) and Chicago Cubs (9,421). Most of the Phillies' defeats came early, with them losing at least 90 games in a season 20 times from 1921-45. However, they did win a World Series in 1980. - usatoday.com

I don't know how many of you saw this, but PBS ran a concert that celebrated Paul Simon winning the first Gershwin Award for Popular Song, from the Library of Congress. It was a great concert, for the most part. They had various singers do their own versions of Paul Simon songs interspersed with old clips of Paul's earlier performances. Occasionally, they would have somebody come out and say a few words about him, as well.

One of the old clips they showed was Paul Simon in center field of Yankee Stadium singing "Mrs. Robinson" shortly after Joe DiMaggio died. Then Bob Costas told a story about Simon running into DiMaggio in a San Francisco restaurant and asking him about the song. According to Costas, DiMaggio thought that the song was basically "a bunch of hippies making fun of him". Simon explained that it was definitely NOT making fun of him and apparently put DiMaggio's mind at ease about it.

Nice story, and pretty amazing clip of the song. There was definitely some dust flying around the Yankee dugout that day.

Even as a Sox fan, I liked that clip.

If you really want to discuss this, I believe that you are incorrect. I believe that the average speed is the same if the object travels in a two-dimensional plane or if it makes a parabola, due to the force of gravity.
Think about it. The g would lower the velocity on the upward part of the arc, but equally increase it on the downward part for a net change of zero. Plus the force of gravity has no effect upon the horizontal vector, only resistance from wind/air would change that. Thus the total distance traveled should be the same according to the laws of physics.

A parabola is motion along a "2 dimensional" plane (a plane is 2D by definition so there's no other type) and it describes the vertical flight of an object as a function of time with zero drag (no atmosphere) and does factors in the force of gravity.

I'm not sure what to make of the rest of your post.

Good points, Dan. I wasn't as precise as I could have been. I should have compared an object traveling in a straight line to one tracing the path of a parabola in a plane. My point was that the forward velocity is not effected by the force of gravity.

Two bullets shot at the same muzzle velocity, but with one subjected to gravity and one not, would both reach a point along the x-axis at the same time. The only difference is that the one not subjected to gravity would be at a higher point along the y-axis. This is despite the fact that the gravitationally affected bullet would have traveled a greater distance due to its more curved path. The important concept to grasp is that the motion made in two directions by this bullet takes place simultaneously, so that it doesn't take any more time to cover the greater distance.

Thus I and the laws of physics disagree with Dexter's premise that the ball which traveled a greater distance would have had to move at a higher average speed in order to reach the destination at the same time.

Oy. I'm glad I never took physics at Georgetown! How can the length of a straight line between two points be the same length as a parabola connecting those points?

The old movie "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" was on Turner Classic the other day. It stars Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly. In the movie, they were part of a double play combination, O'Brien to Ryan to Goldberg. Gotta love it.

Non-Euclidean geometry. :D

Sorry - I'm a Euclid fan. :p

To respond to your post:

Let's take two balls. (A) is a "line drive" - hit parallel to the ground, and we disregard the effect of gravity. (B) is a more traditional HR ball - hit in a parabolic arc (where we do have gravity). We'll assume that the horizontal component of both of their speeds are equal (let's say 10 m/s, for example).

If this is the case, B will have to have a greater overall AVERAGE speed, and we can see this in two ways.

First - geometrically, by combining vectors. Both A and B have the same horizontal speeds. However, ball A also has a vertical component to its speed. When we add the vectors together, the sum of the speeds of A will be greater than the speed of B.

Second - algebraically. In Mick's original example, he simplified the HR ball (B) to a line-drive style hit (A). Given this, the time for A and B to travel the same horizontal distance is the same. However, ball A travels a further overall path than B does. If two objects travel different distances in the same amount of time, they must have different speeds. (With the ball that travels further obviously having the faster speed).

PS Dexter, those are the same thoughts that I was having, but I'm not reaching the same conclusions as you. Essentially, I'm thinking that the g vector will cancel itself out from the half of the parabola that is ascending and the half that is descending, leaving one with the same average. Let me ponder it for a bit and get back to you.

Phillies help Rockies' grounds crew stabilize tarp during rain delay

Associated Press

<!-- end story header --><!-- begin left column --><!-- begin page tools -->Updated: July 8, 2007, 6:15 PM ET

<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --><!-- template inline -->DENVER -- A strong burst of wind caught the tarp as the Colorado Rockies' grounds crew tried to roll it over the infield during a seventh-inning rain delay on Sunday, sending crew members flying into the air.
And when the tarp doubled over, covering some of the workers, several Philadelphia players rushed out of the dugout to help stabilize it.
Shane Victorino grabbed a corner, dug in and began wrestling it toward left field. Ryan Howard held a section down with a knee, and Michael Bourn started heaving sand bags onto the tarp to weigh it down.
Even Adam Eaton, the starting pitcher, was out in the middle of the field, trying to extend the tarp so it could be weighed down. Home plate umpire Bill Welke and crew chief John Hirschbeck were out there holding down the tarp as well.
The only Rockies player out there was LaTroy Hawkins.
No one was hurt and the crew -- with the Phillies' help -- eventually got the tarp down. The crowd, which was scurrying for cover, applauded their efforts.
The rain hit just after the bottom of the sixth with Philadelphia leading 5-4.
The grounds crew had no further trouble with the tarp while removing it after a 50-minute rain delay.

Watched part of the exciting HR derby last night. I can't tell you who won since I fell asleep about midway through. But I can tell you that every time Chris Berman says "BACK BACK BACK" God kills a kitten.

For all of us sox fans...
their magic number is 67 as of the all-star break (i.e. any combo of sox wins and nyy losses) to clinch the AL east. they have 75 games left, 15 of which are against Tampa Bay. The Sox are 108-48 all time vs. TB (win % of .692). Stats show they'll win ~10 of the 15 vs TB; with that said, their magic # is 57 with 65 games left. What does this mean?
the AL east race is O-V-E-R!!!

GO SOX!

more stats for sox fans...

(sox have 75 games left, nyy has 77 left) if the sox win 10 of 15 vs TB and only go 32-28 the other 60 games, nyy would need to go 53-24 (29 games over .500) the 2nd half of the season (basically win almost 70% of their games).

obviously i'll be more comfortable 2 months from now when they still have a 10 game lead, but still....

Watched the cable special "The Ghosts of Flatbush". It's clips were somewhat redundant but it told me something I didn't know about the Dodgers moving to La-la-land.

If Walter O'Malley could have convinced NY city planner Robert Moses to condemn some rundown buildings in Brooklyn, O'Malley would have built a new domed stadium and the Dodgers would not have moved. Moses wouldn't do it - not because the buildings didn't qualify - but because he wanted to see a new stadium built in Queens instead.

Ironically, a few years after the move, Shea Stadium was built right where Moses wanted it.

Oh yeah - the special had some great insights into the hiring of Jackie Robinson. Apparently Branch Rickey wanted him and O'Malley would have been just as happy to not do it!

Actually where O'Malley wanted to put that stadium was in Prospect Heights and building the stadium there would have resulted in a pretty big urban redevelopment plan. At that time there was nothing but open space in Flushing Meadows, both Shea Stadium and the '62 World's Fair were built on the grounds Moses had in mind. I'm not the biggest fan of Robert Moses but it's silly to believe that O'Malley moved his team clear across the country because he couldn't agree with Moses & the city on where to put a new stadium. In fact, O'Malley was offered space in Coney Island to build a stadium, that land is now occupied by the Mets affiliated class A minor league team the Brooklyn Cyclones. What real estate developer O'Malley really wanted was to own the stadium and the ground under it (Moses wanted the stadium to be developed & owned by the city) and even more he wanted to buy into the huge real estate opportunity on the west coast. Moving the Dodgers to LA was an incredibly smart business decision by O'Malley and I suspect he would have made the move even if the city had agreed with all his demands.

BTW, it's interesting to note the proposed site of O'Malley's Brooklyn stadium is about where the proposed new arena for the Nets will be, owned by real estate developer Bruce Ratner. This project includes both high and low income housing along with the arena.

Isn't there a rule that the official scorer can credit someone else with the win, if a pitcher is ineffective?

Would the above be an appropriate application? Linebrink walked two batters and then surrendered a game-tying 3-run homerun. Why should he get the win?

Mark Dexter Thu Jul 19, 2007 07:47am

Rule 10.17(c) Comment: The official scorer generally should, but is not required to, consider the appearance of a relief pitcher to be ineffective and brief if such relief pitcher pitches less than one inning and allows two or more earned runs to score (even if such runs are charged to a previous pitcher).

Maybe b/c the only other person who would be eligible for the win would be Hoffman, and he'd rather be credited with the save. I don't know if the scorer talked to Hoffman about it or just assumed it. I know that official scorers will sometimes talk to a player after a game to get the player's opinion of whether a play was a hit or error, and then change the official scoring based on the player's input. Maybe this is the pitcher's version of that.

ChuckElias Wed Jul 25, 2007 10:00am

Sox and Indians played a gem last night. If you're a fan of an old-fashioned pitching duel, you should've been watching. Dice-K continues a run of great outings by Sox starters, going 7 innings without giving up a run. Okajima pitched the 8th and Papelbon got the save. Exactly according to the script. Beckett, Gabbard, Wakefield and John Lester (in his first start since his cancer diagnosis!!) all pitched great in their most recent starts.

Yankees beat up on the Devil Rays pretty good last week. All I can say about that is that I'm glad we still have 15 games to play against Tampa! :)

ChuckElias Wed Jul 25, 2007 10:06am

While I was having good feelings about the Sox, I went to check the standings, and happened to notice that there are a few teams in each league that haven't played each other yet. For example, the Angels and Blue Jays haven't played against each other yet. It's the last week of July! I guess that's what an unbalanced schedule will do.

Rangers/Royals haven't matched up; Detroit hasn't played the Yankees or the A's. In the National League, Braves/D'Backs haven't played; and the Marlins haven't played Colorado or the Giants. The Giants are still waiting to play the Nats.

Wierd.

PS Here's another example: the closer blows a three-run lead in the 9th, yet gets the win when his team pushes one across in the bottom of the inning. :(

Unfortunately, the Sox were on the wrong end of the 1-0 score last night. :( Oritz popped weakly to third to end the game. Papi's average in the 8th and 9th innings with a chance to tie or take the lead was like .340 last year. This year, it's only .180 with no homers and no RBIs.

Gotta hand it to the Cleveland starter, tho. Fausto Carmona is the guy that the Sox torched twice in 3 nights last year when he was the closer: http://forum.officiating.com/showpos...&postcount=482

I'm glad he bounced back after that and that he's having a good year (13-4), but the Sox could've used that game last night.

I do have to admit that CFL games are more fun to watch than NFL games, with the big field and everybody running around.

I have the same thoughts on the NFL field as I do on the NBA court. I honestly think that today's players have outgrown both, and both sports would be wise to enlarge their playing areas. And you can add the older small hockey arenas to that too.

Yeah, it's a bigger field, but they put 2 extra guys out there. If the CFL went 11 players per side and played 4 downs, instead of 3, I'd watch all I could get. The 3 downs just kills it for me.

But I love the single point for not returning a kick out of the end zone and I love the extra large end zones. We get one game a week on Fox Sports Net around here. Defending Grey Cup champs BC Lions are out to a 4-0 start.

Whatever happened to the Las Vegas Posse, Shreveport Pirates, and the Sacramento Gold Miners, anyway?
