There was a great exchange during ESPN's Dodgers game last night. Jackie Robinson's widow, Rachel, was in the booth and was talking about his steal of home in the World Series. She said that she and Yogi Berra don't even say hi to each other any more. When they see each other, their usual greeting is: (Yogi) "He was out", (Rachel) "He was safe, Yogi".

The most fascinating story I heard from her during the Costas radio show was about Jackie's court martial in the Army.
Apparently, the Army had only recently issued an directive stating that soldiers could not be segregated on Army buses. Robinson got on the bus and sat next to the wife (who according to Rachel, looked white) of one of the men in his unit, towards the front. The bus driver directed him to move to the back, and he refused. The driver proceeded to make a stink of it, and an officer on the bus ordered Jackie to comply. He still refused. The driver went to the next stop and had Jackie arrested by the MPs. He was court martialed for insubordination and eventually exonerated and given an honorable discharge. I wonder if he would have been accepted and even signed by the Dodgers had he been carrying a dishonorable discharge with him.

Speaking of pitchers, in looking at the DL's of all the clubs, every club except 3 (White Sox, Brewers, and Giants) have at least one pitcher on the DL, most have 2 or 3, and some teams (...cough...Yankees...cough...) have as many as six pitchers on the DL.
Maybe run production will be going up this year?
