I have to agree that #1 is the first interpretation I came up with, although I disagree that one would "easily" come to that conclusion. Yeah you're right. The comment was obviously meant to be taken literally and without doubt there was no intent to be humorous, sarcastic, sardonic, cynical or just plain silly.
