There was NO call for leaving the court.
Why did the player run off the court? He just lost track of his position? His momentum while on defense carried him off? He was trying to confuse the defense (not likely if he was only off the court for 6-8 feet)? He was going around a defender?

The official must judge this, and then determine the correct ruling (legal, violation, T) under the appropriate rules set (FED, NCAA, FIBA, NBA, other).

Also, your original post said that the player was off the court "for seconds". It doesn't even take a second to run 8' while going back on offense.

This is an interesting discussion. I see many times when two players go past the end line to pass the ball in after a made basket, then one moves on to the court and receives the pass. This is not a violation is it?

I also seen lately that during a play a player run out of bounds and then enter the court to receive a pass - usually over the end line and then back. The players way was blocked by a defender if she remainded in bounds. I've never seen this called as a penalty. Is it?

Legal following a made basket. All 5 may step out if they so choose.

It is, but it doesn't seem to be called often. I have only had players stepping on the line, and not because their path was blocked; only because they swung a bit wide on the cut.

No idea why he went OOB coming back. There was no one else around him. He simply ran outside the line...nothing more to it than that.

I put "for seconds" only to show it wasn't an extended period of time...not as if he went anywhere like the bench or anything. I know the length of time isn't the issue, just trying to paint the picture.

Then I'd tend to pass on the violation call. Since he was back inbounds before he touched the pass, I'd make it a legal play.
