Nice job, the defender earned the right to that call by making a good play to get into position.

You know, Shave Tail, I asked myself the exact same thing, and I think I'll sleep better. I admit that it helps that the team that got the basket taken away won in the end!

And Snaq, what you said to me is exactly what I told the coach and my partner, too. I wasn't going to take it away from her!

Overtime ???

Why do basketball officials "pretend" that they don't like overtime games. It's exciting for players, coaches, fans, and officials. If nonofficials hear us "pretending" not to like overtime games, they might get the wrong impression that we just want to finish the game, get our paycheck, and go home as soon as possible. Officials on all levels. Please stop this "pretending". It makes me ashamed to be an official.

Overtimes? Personally, I don't allow them. If the game is close near the end, I tell my partner, "If this goes into overtime - IT'S YOUR FAULT!!!"

I tell people that, as an official, I don't care who wins the game. All I care about is that at the end of regulation time, one team has at least one point more than the other.

I am just the opposite and really enjoy overtime. Gives me a great chance to improve on my officiating skills.

Thoughts on Overtime

Not "allowing overtime" in a game is a disservice to the game. As an official, you owe it to the kids to never do this. No matter what level you are officiating, that current game is the most important game to those kids and if you "don't allow overtime" that is a shame.

I guess this guy is suffering from "DKPY" (Doesn't Know Padgett Yet) syndrome. You can always tell a newbie.

AJ - welcome to the group. Eventually, you'll be able to tell when someone is just kidding. FYI - the sarcastic eyerolling smilie is a dead giveaway.

Got it....

Sounds good. I'll have to get that syndrome checked out by my doctor!!! A fellow official made me aware of this forum...said good things about it. I decided to check it out. I've been reading and catching up. Happy to be on board.

I don't know, or know of, a single official that would actually do anything purposefully to prevent an overtime. We may joke about it, but in reality, some of the most fun we have as officials comes in the OT games.
Now, let's not take ourselves too seriously, either. It's okay to joke around.

Some of the people were being very sarcastic. If you stay awhile you might see this.

Peace
