Yup, the rules say that the disqualified player is supposed to remain on the bench. An official can send him to the locker room under certain circumstances, but not his coach.

Case book play 10.5 for anyone that's interested.

Interesting. I've never stopped this; only insisted they have an adult with him. I've had coaches do it for various reasons, and I'm not about to stop it. As for the assistant returning to the court, you don't know that there isn't another adult watching the kid in the locker room.
