All the officials' fault

Was watching a game last night sitting right behind the scorer's table. FED rules. With about 4:30 left visiting player (V1) takes home team's best player (H1) to the floor with a hard foul. V1 then uses H1's head to help himself to his feet. V1 is immediately whistled for he technical foul by R1. V1 then gets into the face of R1 and is pulled away by his teammates. V1 gets to the bench, picks up a chair and slams it down on the floor. He is immediately hit with his second technical by R2 (who signals that he has been ejected). The assistant coach escorts the player to the lockerroom and then returns to the bench alone. H1 then makes four out of five free throws to extend the lead from five to nine points. After the free throws, the home coach asks R1 to come over and the discuss something at length (very calmly). The home team ends up pulling away for about a 14 point win. As the coaches shake hands I hear the losing coach say, "Merry Christmas. The referee's gave you that one."

Before I left I heard the coach talking so someone in the lobby.

Coach: Can you believe that? He never said a word to the referees. They were baiting him. They completely took us out of the game.

Other person: Have you ever seen him act like that before?

Coach: Yeah, all the time. He is an emotional player. I don't know how to change that. I am going to suspend him for one game.

Any thoughts about all this?

Thoughts? Yes. The coach is an idiot.

I'd have to see it to judge. If the V player was being a jackass picking himself up, I can see calling this T. He already committed a hard foul on a player and now he's "rubbing it in" a little. For game management I can see this T. The second one is a no brainer. It sounds to me like the kid cost them the game with his actions, not the official.

I have no problem about the "T's".
I don't understand...'The assistant coach escorts the player to the lockerroom and then returns to the bench alone'. Why is the player left in the locker room?
Also....'H1 then makes four out of five free throws to extend the lead from four to nine points.' Is this the 'new math' that is being taught???;)

Yup, the rules say that the disqualified player is supposed to remain on the bench. An official can send him to the locker room under certain circumstances, but not his coach.

Case book play 10.5 for anyone that's interested.

Interesting. I've never stopped this; only insisted they have an adult with him. I've had coaches do it for various reasons, and I'm not about to stop it. As for the assistant returning to the court, you don't know that there isn't another adult watching the kid in the locker room.

JR, Thanks for the play in the case book.:)

I noticed that as well. Would this be a job of the officials to tell the coaches this? I also noticed the player coming out of the lockerrom in his street clothes with about 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Also, is their a mechanic for letting a player know he has been ejected. Or is it just assumed from the second technichal. R2 in this case made the "arm waving motion" much like a baseball umpire ejecting a player, coach or manager.

I also had a problem with the coach saying that HE was suspending the player for one game. Our state mandates a one game suspension for a player being ejected from a game. Although he may have meant that he was adding a game to that.

1) According to the book, only an official can send a player to the dressing room. In real life, if they're getting the yappy l'il sh!t out of our hair, who cares?

2) Just make sure that you tell the player that he has been ejected. Your partner then tells the coach, and then tells the timer to start the 30-second countdown.

3) Forget about suspensions. They have nothing to do with officials. Let the league/state take care of it.

Thats garbage and I hope not reflective on the quality and coaching in your area.

In Ohio we are to report all ejections to the OHSAA. Not doing so would risk being suspended ourselves.

I agree that we do not enforce the suspension but we do report the issue that will cause the suspension.

I was confused by this as well. But, I'm going to assume H1 was in the bonus. So, the hard foul by V1 (1&1, misses first), two technicals by V1 (4 throws, makes all four), thus 4 out of 5 were made.

JR as I am still learning. I thought I read where you tell the Coach first, then the timer and finally the player. I even thought I read where the non-fourl calling official actually does the informing. Is this correct? I suppose in the real world it is irrelevant when you tell the player; as the coach and timer are critical to play continuing.

I completely agree on note 1.

Correct. See 2.8.4 (Disqualification Procedure)

[QUOTE=umpire99] With about 4:30 left visiting player (V1) takes home team's best player (H1) to the floor with a hard foul. This gets my attention. You certainly would had to be there to see the severity of each act. It may have been handled perfectly. :)
