I had a coach last year yell at me at the half because his team had 9 fouls and the other team only had 2. He had an 18 point lead. I told him I would even out the fouls and the score if he wanted me too...he took the lead and got whacked up by 25 points in the second half complaining about the fouls again.

Clueless!

Had a 7-8 year old youth coach once give me the, "It's 7 to 2 ref, come on!" Not a single touch foul in those 7, all hard contact and most had a kid on the floor. Again I hear, "Come on it's 7 to 2."

I go over and say, "So what are you saying?" "Are we incompetent or cheating, because I want to know just what this T is going to be for."

Conversly, this reminds me of one of my favorite officiating stories.

ACC game in the late 80s or so, and Jim Valvano was not happy with the way a game was being called. As one of the officials is near the bench, Jimmy says "Hey (I can't recall his name right now)...can you T me up for what I'm thinking?"

Confused, the official says "No, of course not."

Jimmy shoots back: "Good. Cause I think you suck."

Official is laughing too hard to give him the T.

Hank Nichols was the official. I just read it in a book by John Feinstein.

Watched a tightly called large school boys game the other night, and these guys called the first quarter real tight. 11 fouls (6/5) by at the end of 8 minutes, and very little chirping from the coaches, only on the close ones.
2nd quarter was clean, same with rest of game until things were tight and fouling 'had to be done.' Those guys accomplished what I would guess is their approach and the rest of the game moved along real well. You hear, 'let is play,' and after the teams adjusted to the officiating, that's what they did. They played.

I think he was referring to his maturity level.

Worst case

The worst case of lopsided fouls I ever saw occured last year. By the middle of the third quarter, we'd called 14 fouls on the home team and none on the visitors. The coach was absolutely livid. It got to the point that I was afraid he'd start yelling and screaming when we finally called one on the visiting team, something like, "They've been doing THAT all game, why are you going to start calling it NOW?" He didn't say anything.

I do remember his comment in one rant: "I've never seen anything like this before!" My immediate response was, "Neither have I!"

If he would have known anything about coaching, he'd see the difference (other than the fact that his team was small and outclassed). His boys sat on the perimeter and shot 3's they couldn't hit. The other team drove the lane.
