Had a Blarge Last Night

Sigh...NCAA-W game. I'm L. Drive along baseline on my side, right in front of me...big crash. Defender jumped in there after offensive player went airborne so I have block all the way...hear another whistle and look up to see my C - from the freaking other side of the court punching an offensive foul signal...we get together and she readily admits she didn't see the play, just the players on the floor, didn't hear my whistle and "felt something needed to be called." Another sigh...got it all worked out, went with the block, let visiting coach vent a little bit, and finished the game...had a nice, long discussion in the locker room. There's a first time for everything...

Frustrating thing is that we discussed in pre-game the need for the outside officials to have a very patient preliminary signal on double whistles so this wouldn't happen...she said she "just got caught up in the excitement"...oh well...

As bad as it is (and feels) to have a blarge, at least you didn't have to go to the table and say, "we have two fouls on the play". You could get together and -- gasp! -- get the right call.

Yep...I still like the NCAA-W mechanics on handling these...just didn't like having one in the first place!

She didn't go to the required camp this summer?

It that situation I would rather the Trail come in and have a call if both players are on the floor and it was a big crash, then the C coming all the way across the lane. If the lead went brain dead and didn't have a call. If you didn't see the whole play why would you call it?

I agree, I like this procedure a lot better.

Beats me!

And Mick, she was at the same "required" summer camp that I was at!

I guess I could understand it if there was no whistle...it was pretty serious contact and both players went down hard, but I hit the whistle and stepped right in there with me fist up...not sure what happened with my partner...like I said, she readily admitted that she blew it...

The visiting coach was pretty funny in a sad sort of way...conversation went something like this:

"DJ - she had an offensive foul. How can you call a block?"

"It's my call coach - it was in my primary area."

"Well she blew her whistle first"

"No, she didn't, and it wouldn't matter if she had."

"Well, there's no way that was a block. She was there."

"No coach, she moved in after the shooter jumped. She can't do that. You know that."

"I know that. But this just looks bad. And it's her 5th foul, too...what am I supposed to say to her?"

At which point I smiled and walked away...

Too bad about the double mechanic on the play, but it looks like you handled it very well. Good thread for those who say "I'll never have a blarge in one of my games" to read. We all hope it won't happen and with good mechanics it won't, but one of the first things I learned in this business is never say never. I haven't had it happen to me yet (I'm knocking on my desk as I write this).

"You can tell her to watch the tape later."

Yup, it's like ordering a "numero cinco" when I go out for Mexican food. It endears me to the natives to speak their language.

Sounds like she subscribes to the "I'm going to get the play right" philosophy instead of the "trusting my partners" philosophy.

Did you give her the "do you trust me" speech?

Z,
Rockyroad didn't have to beat her up for that call or patronize her. She fessed up and conceded. Why beat a dead horse?

So, Rockyroad,
..."Did you give her the "do you trust me" speech?" - borrowed from Z.

Nope...no speeches. just asked some questions and discussed the answers together...I really believe it was just a knee-jerk reaction on her part. We all learned from it as a crew.

What is reasoning for the men's side calling it two fouls rather than getting together and picking one?
