How'd you like a smack in the wee knee?

I'd say "sorry" too, but no one would ever believe me.

Stan, I chickened out. I decided on the clean-up/synvisc-neovisc treatment instead. It's only a stop-gap procedure for me, as I well know; it's good for 6-12 months, but you can repeat the injections. I just wasn't looking forward to 2 replacements being done at the same time. You get a series of 3 injections in each knee, a week apart. In my case, both knees are kaput, so there was no way that just replacing one was a viable choice. The only other option that they gave me was more cortisone shots. They seem to work well on me, but they're also just a short-term treatment - about 6 weeks. And...you shouldn't take too many of 'em anyway because of the side effects, according to my doctor.

Stan, how did your replacement go? How long before you could start walking? I know different people that have had this procedure, and their recovery time seems to be all over the map- depending on the individual. You seem to be well ahead of the curve, being ready to run in 6 months. You have my honest admiration for getting back into the groove at all, let alone so quickly.

I know 2 guys that went back to officiating- one after a knee replacement and the other after a hip replacement. Both did football, and I worked with both of them. They both could run absolutely pain-free, and neither of them worried about any consequences either.

Btw, one of the things that was bothering me was that I heard that artificial knees were only good for 5-7 years. Apparently, with the new ones though, you're looking at a 20 year shelf life now.

Stan, please let me know how your games come out. I'm gonna have to get something done sooner than later, so any info is appreciated.

Good luck and kick azz this Sunday, Stan.

I'm facing this same problem, but only the left knee. Orthopedic surgeon told me I need to make a decision about whether or not I wanted to continue to officiate (I turned 63 last May) and the knee is getting worse. I'm not working any summer ball at all trying to see how the knee will feel before the season starts. I really enjoy officiating, but I am definitely in the twi-light of a mediocre career.

Just a wild guess here but the side effects are:

Grouchiness
Easily irritated
Crankiness
Insomnia
Addiction to brown pop
Low tolerance for bull$hit

Can anyone else think of any others?

Knee was fine, actually the rest of me was not bad either. I was conditioned as well as the other guys. I guess I put enough miles on my Schwinn air-dyne. We're in a heat wave so the gym was almost uninhabitable. That worked to my favor, kids figured out that they didn't want to run after about the first 5 minutes.

For the first couple of months and then after workouts I would experience a burning sensation that ice packs could mask. Friend says that is nerves regenerationg or something like that Dr. said that the younger you are the more nerves you have to be damaged during surgery and the more nerve pain post op. Today, Monday, the muscles feel fine but I do have some slight burning sensations. I can live with it. I'm thinking I'll get stronger and work out of it.

Now if only I could use ice and ibuprofen on my officiating skills!

M&M: No measurable rain for about 3 weeks, presently 100 plus heat index

I have heard of that before as well. I wonder if that's a similar sensation to when your leg "falls asleep" from lack of circulation, and there's that tingling/stinging sensation as the blood flows back in. (I am not a doctor, and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night either...)

Even stronger medications and alcohol don't seem to help mine.

You must've missed out on the rain we got last week; there were some spots in our area of east central IL that got 2.5" - 3.0". However, we've also got the heat now. I think after that rain, and with this heat, you can go into the cornfield and actually hear the corn grow. Maybe I'll do that. It's gotta beat watching the Cubs play...

A friend of mine had both knees replaced AND he had eye laser surgery in consecutive off seasons. He is a year older than me and he only does 3 man games twice a week. He sees the court much better than he runs the court. I will turn 50 during the next season, but due to some of the jokers in my assn, I will not work that night lest I become a victim of some of the hijinks I have participated in during the past couple of seasons.
