I agree that the rulebook is clear. That's why I wondered if a change had been made through a mid-season bulletin. I can't get onto eofficials to check the old bulletins, for some reason.

Aha!! I was right. Here it is from the bulletin dated December 14, 2005. It's on page 3:

On a related matter, assistant coaches and other bench personnel except for the head coach must remain seated during the game, standing only to react to a good play. Assistant coaches are allowed to stand briefly to give instructions to their players but must immediately return to their seat on the bench.

Now, does that mean that assistant coaches can stand to talk to players on the bench or on the court? Or both?

Aren't players always on the court? If they'd meant to restrict it to the guys on the bench, they'd have said "bench personnel".
