seatbelt rule and coaching box
is there a "seatbelt" rule for ncaa women's basketball?
Also, where is the coaching box. Does it extend from the first chair to the baseline? I like to roam the sideline when I can, and AAU uses NCAA rules. Thanks for the clarification |
Were you at Ramapo College 2 weeks ago?

I was not at Rampo College
this all stems from a mild disagreement between myself and I ref I know very well |
There is no seatbelt rule in the NCAA. I know this is true for men's and almost positive that it is true for women's.
The coaching box extends from the 28' hashmark to the endline. The relevant rule is NCAA 10-10. There is no mention of the coach losing the coaching box privilege. And there is no section that addresses any difference in the women's game. |

Here's a question, Bob. If the head coach gets tossed, does the assistant get to stand? In HS, they've made a point of saying no. But I don't see anything specifically addressing this in 10-11.
Also, I was told last year that there was a change allowing assistants to stand "briefly" or "momentarily" to coach as long they immediately sat back down. Any truth to that? Again, I don't see anything specific in there. Maybe it was released in a mid-season bulletin? |
Chuck,
Asst. coaches are NOT ALLOWED to stand while the clock is running--no exceptions. |

Of course, in real life....... I've seen D1 games with assistant coaches up and down. I don't think that most official care, even if they do happen to notice them, as long as it's quick and they're not b!tching at the officials. |
I agree that the rulebook is clear. That's why I wondered if a change had been made through a mid-season bulletin. I can't get onto eofficials to check the old bulletins, for some reason.

Aha!! I was right. Here it is from the bulletin dated December 14, 2005. It's on page 3:

Aren't players always on the court? If they'd meant to restrict it to the guys on the bench, they'd have said "bench personnel".
