With the appearance and expansion of Taunting in recent rule book - what are people calling? Tonight (JV) had a kid - a pretty talented player - really liked to celebrate his score's. He: Signaled his own Three's More than once said "Two in the book for me" on made baskets "Ooh's and Ahh's" galore He wasn't overly obnoxoius - but a lot of self speak that was rather unique. Book says taunting disrespects opponents. Does this?

One of those things that you have to see to judge, but if you think it is even borderline, I suggest a quick, "Knock it off." If he doesn't, deal with it appropriately.

I DEFINITELY wouldn't have tolerated any of that. At the first dead ball, I would have called the team captain over to me and told him to control his players, specifically the player in question. No signalling three on shots - this is the official's job. No chatter after a basket as this could be viewed as an attempt to embarass, ridicule or demean the other team. In other words, taunting or baiting the other team. T if he continues.

I personally would not get upset about that. Unless he is pointing out a player or making comments to the crowd, let that go. Celebration is apart of the game (any game for that matter), let the kids have fun.
Peace

I expect it's going to depend a lot on the circumstances. If he's up in the opponent's face, what you quoted is definitely taunting. If he's looking at him mom in hte crowd when he says it, he's proabably just pointing out that his really lousy game yesterday is behind him and he's moving forward now. Is his tone of voice taunting? Is he talking to someone specific? Are the opponents getting upset?
It sounds to me as though a warning would be about the right response, but you're the one who was there, so it's gotta be your judgment. Unless it's really obvious, I think it makes sense to warn first. |

Is it just me who is wondering where the heck the kid's coach is? A coach is allowing a kid to celebrate himself like that? Amazing the things that coaches don't take care of leaving it up to the judgment of the official.

POE 1A- TAUNTING/SELF-PROMOTION;- 2003-04 "Further, the committee is concerned with the trend towards players 'playing to the crowd', attempting to increase attention and praise for their own individual accomplishments rather than towards the game itself and team accomplishments. While many of these actions are not specifically illegal by rule, extreme behavious could and should be considered taunting and baiting of the opponents". That falls in line with the FED's concern with "number popping" in this year's POE.--"Holding the uniform out from the chest area to display the team name to the opponent or fans". If the kid ain't being obnoxious, I'd just tell him to knock that sh!t off. A little whisper to his captain or coach might help too. |

When when were kids playing ball in the parks (extinct practice) we'd always "announce" our moves in the style of the late great Celtic's announcer Johnny Most.
If I were posting a guy up, I'd be saying, "Crow..with ball...... He works....left....on Peter Dowling..... He works...right.....Crow fakes.... It's up..... Bang!" I could never break the habit and believe me, it annoys co-workers. I'll be in my office in the morning..... "Crow picks up an Invoice.... He reviews the hours.... He reviews the materials... He goes for his pen.... It's approved.... Bang!" This kid sounds OK to me...... |

Crowd and Player
I knew i saw this mentioned somewhere. So Player A is being razzed by student section, maybe 10 kids, "Airball" things of that nature. Player A then runs by section, I am in the area, and calls them "a bunch of *****".The not so nice word for gay people. Quite frankly I had never thought about it till it happened last night. Should I have T the kid or what ???/
