I have noticed that over the years that officials has been discussing different major points during the pre game. I would like to put together a list of what officials feel are the top ten major points that should be covered during a pre game.

1. It is very important for the crew to be comfortable/confident with each other.
2. Set the tone early. 3. Use the POE for #2 4. Take care of off-ball; screeners, post play, body checking 5. Communicate clearly with partners and coaches/players when needed. 6. It is very important that we are right when we blow our whistle under 2 minutes (in the game). Teams can't recover from our mistakes at this point.

I will add: Trust your partner(s) and the system. In other words, follow the mechanics as prescribed for your level, and call your area while letting your partners call theirs. Maintaining eye contact with your partners during some situations is always important. Don't hand a ball to a player for a throw-in without making sure your partners are ready. Or, after a foul or violation, letting your partner know where the ball's going to be thrown-in, or how many shots we've got it it's a shooting foul or bonus. Go over end-of-half or game situations; who has the last-second shot? How will you handle unusual situations, such as T's, disqualifications, etc.? Who reports, who administers? In the beginning of the year, go over new rules and mechanics so everyone's on the same page. As the year progresses, maybe you can go over strange plays that have happened, or things that appear to be a problem this year. I know there are others.

This is my pre-game checklist from last year. I haven't updated for 05/06 yet but will this week. I keep this posted on my game board and use it every game.
Communicate, Be Professional Have Fun P.O.E. Closely guarded, TO (coaches), Flopping, Language, Table Side Mechanics New Rules: 1. Intentional Kick 2. Faceguarding 3. Ejection for leaving bench 4. Foul Out Sequence Highlights: Jump Ball Coach or Player Warnings Help on OB Primary and staying with shooter Double Whistles Time expiration Jump Balls Primary/Walks/Get it Right Awareness on # of Fouls, Shooter 1 and 1 signal Fights, Flagrants Foul Calls and Consistency Bringing in Subs Time Outs and returning to Floor Technical Fouls |

How will we handle double whistles on a drive to the basket that originate outside the Lead's area? Who takes the call? The outside official, since that's where the play started, or the Lead, b/c that's where the contact occured. This is a huge point to go over.
You could also go over what should happen if one official signals a 3-point basket, but another official is 100% sure that the shooter was on the line
