HELP!!!! I recently strained the achilles tendon in my left leg. Hurts like heck to walk on it, even more to run!! Since i have a boatload of varsity and college games during the next two months, i DO NOT want to miss many (if any) games!! Rest seems to help, but would welcome any other suggestions on how to deal with it. Stretches, ice, hot, etc..Are there ant wraps or braces to support the achilles?? Any advice or comment would be welcome. Thanks

Lightbulb Medical attention.

I think you need to talk to a medical attention on this one. It might depend solely on your injury. I just have know people that it cost them a season or a significant part of one, because this injury needs rest and affects your ability to run and move.

Have you seen a doctor?

Are you sure it's not torn?

Describe how it happened?

I understand how difficult it is to get a good college schedule. An official in our association recently went down and is chomping at the bit to get back. Don't jeopardize the rest of your career, and more importantly, your life, by officiating on this injury when you shouldn't!

Exclamation Right on TH!!!!

I totally agree, there are more things important than officiating (did I just say that!). Please get yourself checked out, injuries happen, but do not jeapordize more by being silly and trying to push yourself back. Easy for me to say, the day I had a car accident that could have killed me, I was trying to do a game that night. Thank God for my sake the game was cancelled because of weather. I realize how addicting officiating can be, it is like a drug, but other things are more important

God Bless

Don't know where you live, but most larger towns should have a good sports clinic, go get it looked at! Even if it is just a sprain right now, you might blow it out later and that is a year minimum to come back from.

Did this happen during a game? If so, you might have the lost game wage insurance through your state assoc or the NFOA.

I lost 1/2 a season a few years ago when my appendix went south, it sucks making all those calls to the AD's.

Any school's trainer should know how to tape an achilles. I have had it done several times and it works very well. If your achilles is that sore, you should go to a specialist and have it looked at. Achiles injuries are very slow to heal and can be very serious. A ruptured tendon can take over one year to heal.

Good advice

Mikeref, I blew up my knee the first year I recieved a Varsity HS Schedule. Lost the whole season. It really sucked to sit and watch. The other posts gave you some very good advice. See a doctor let him tell you what is wrong. Missing one season now doesn't compare with missing all seasons to follow.

just as important...if you can't give 100%, it's not fair to the kids/players. If someone saw you favoring your injury, or not giving your all...your game might be perceived in a negative way.

Get fixed, and take care of you!

Mike,

I asked these questions because I'm concerned that it may be torn. That's why you need to see a doctor if you haven't.

I've known three people who tore their achilles. All three described it like being shot in the calf muscle. I was playing basketball with a friend who went down hard in the open floor. He started yelling, "Who hit me?! Who hit me?! He thought someone had thrown the basketball and nailed him in the back of the leg.

One of the three didn't know that her's was torn. The doctor even misdiagnosed it. A year later she had surgery to repair it and is now crippled for life. She has to wear a leg brace to walk.

Also, if it is just strained, you don't want to risk tearing it. It's like a rubber band snapping.

Let us hear from you!

Tony
