Personally, I do not react at all. For seven years, my partners have always either blown their whistles, and/or thrown their arm(s) up
or some such reaction to the horn. In reality, everyone just reacts to the sound of the horn and ignores the referees. Kind of like Captains' meetings (a waste of breath). |

Quote:
I suppose it depends on how they "do it in your area" and how you were taught. We were always taught to raise a hand (like a violation) and have the trail official blow the whistle to signal the end of quarter. If there is an airborne shot, the whistle ends the half, not the horn, because the ball is live until it goes in or it's certain that it will miss. Z |

Rule book: pg. 43 Rule 5, Sec 6, Art.1-3
pg. 48-49 Rule 6, sec 7, Art.5-6, exception pg. 79 signals #2, 27, 28, 32 Officials Manual: The appropriate sections in Officials Manual are listed under the heading "Ruling on Last-Second Shot". 2 officials: page 47 numbers 282-285. 3 officials: pgs85-86 numbers 390-39 No.284 & 392 are most important to your Q. Case Book: pg. 36-38, To answer your question when the horn sounds which signals the expiration of playing time the ball becomes dead immediately and the period ends. There are exceptions to this statement when a tap/try occurs near sounding of horn. Whether we as officials echo that horn by sounding our whistle depends on the situation. 1. Horn, no try, quiet gym, players stop. Horn has done it's job and whistle not necessary but OK if you wish. 2. Horn, no try, noisy gym, players continue. Blow whistle to echo horn to stop play. 3. Horn with try attempt but ball not released. Blow whistle, give signal 2(stop clock/dead ball)and follow with signal 27 indicating no score can happen. 4. Ball released, horn. Withhold whistle. When try is unsuccessful blow whistle and give signal 27. If try is successful, blow whistle and give signal 28. If try was a three point attempt Blow whistle, give 3 pt attempt signal and follow with either signal 27 or (32 followed by 28). The Officials Handbook could also enlighten you on this subject if you can come across one. |

Whistle.
At least in my state, it is very acceptable to blow the whiste at the end of the quarter or half/game. And if there is an issue of whether the shot is going to go or not, to wave if off before the shot goes.
Peace
