Throw-in spot...again

Forgive me if discussed....

NFHS, No bonus in effect:

A1, who is within the 3-point arc, fouls B1, who is outside the 3-point arc.

Inbound location?

Endline on the 3 foot mark. The foul took place inside the arc, not outside.

Peace

If B1 had the ball and was attempting a try when A1 committed this foul, would you award 2 or 3 FTs if the shot was unsuccessful?

That will tell you the location of the foul and whether you administer on the end line or sideline (28 ft mark).

Great way to visualize it and also give you a thought process.

I think that Nevada may be onto something here.

Yes I agree. Did not personally think of it that way, but he is right.

Peace

Jeff:

Before the Four Throw-in Spots rules change was adopted that we all would have automatically administered the Throw-in from the Side Line without even thinking about it.

Thanks...so it is the location of the player whom is fouled. Ergo, in my OP, if B1 pushed (team control foul) A1, then the inbound would be on the baseline.

Correct, throw-in would be from the end line

I do not believe that the intent of the new NFHS rule for determining the location of the ensuing throw-in after a foul is to require that both players involved are completely outside the 3pt line in order for the sideline 28-ft mark to be correct. Therefore, I have been going with the location of the player who was fouled. My logic is that the player who fouled must go to the location of the player who suffers the foul, so the foul occurs at that location.

Three Point Line ...

IAABO came out with a "You Make the Call" video about this (three point line, fouler, or foulee) a few months ago.

I can't remember what was decided.

Any IAABO guys or gals remember?

Kicked Ball ...

It was not a foul but a kicking violation on a throwin. Kicker was inside the three point arc, but the ball, when being kicked, was outside the three point arc.

Here's the IAABO interpretation.

The was an interesting situation that we thought officials should be aware of moving forward, as it could impact a close game if we don't thoroughly understand the rules that apply.

Beginning last season, the NFHS approved a rules change that created specific designated spots for all stoppages except for out of bounds. This year, the NFHS expanded those spots to the backcourt. Now we essentially have eight designated spots, 2 on each end line, 3 feet outside the nearer lane line, and 4 along the sidelines at the 28 foot mark on each side of the court.

The basis for determining where the ball will be put in play is the 3-point line. Stoppages inside the 3 point line go to the end line; stoppages outside the 3-point line go to the sideline.

Now, let's apply these provisions to this play. A thrower releases the ball, and the defender extends their leg and kicks the ball. The ball was literally kicked outside the 3-point arc. But what was the status of the player who kicked the ball?

The defensive player had her right foot inside the arc while her left foot was in the air. By rule, she is considered inside the 3-point line.

Since the kicking violation technically occurred inside the 3-point line, the ensuing throw-in should be along the endline, 3 feet outside the nearer lane line.

This was an interesting play, as if this is ruled to be a violation outside the arc, the ball would be advanced to the 28-foot mark, which is considerable in situations where teams are setting up for a last second try.

We hope this play summary alerts officials to an important nuance to the new throwin provisions and helps with understanding the importance of knowing the player location rules.

None of this is any different from last year, or the last decades, if A was inside the FT semicircle and B (or the ball) is outside it; or A is inside the diagonal lines and B (or the ball) is outside it (recogizing that the last has some judgment as to the position of the players).
