"other than the start of the game and each extra period. Question. First extra period, does the Possession arrow remain in the direction that it is pointing or just treat the extra period like the the initial jump ball to begin the game.

A Forgettable Anachronistic Formality ...

... microbursts of mayhem as outdated as two-hand set shots, peach baskets, laced basketballs, and chicken wire cages around the perimeter of the court.

Jump ball (almost always, barring any unusual circumstances, i.e. technical foul) needed to start the first extra period and any additional extra periods, and, of course, the start of the game.

4-28-1: A jump ball is a method of putting the ball into play to start the game and each extra period by tossing it up between two opponents in the center restraining circle, or as in 7-3 before the alternating possession procedure has been established.

7-3-2: If the alternating-possession procedure has not been established, play must be resumed by a jump ball between the two players involved in the center restraining circle.

6-4-1: Other than the start of the game and each extra period, the teams will alternate taking the ball out of bounds for a throw-in.

6-4-Note: When the alternating-possession procedure has not been established, the jump ball shall be in the center restraining circle between the two players involved in the subsequent action.

Comment ...

6.1.1 COMMENT: Unless a technical foul occurs or a player violates during the dead ball which precedes the start of the game or each extra period, the game and each extra period is started with a jump ball in the center restraining circle. A rejump may be necessary between the jumpers or if the alternating-possession procedure has not been established, a jump ball will take place between the two players involved at the center restraining circle. These situations will be the only time a jump ball will take place in a game. In all other jump-ball situations and the start of the second, third and fourth quarters, the alternating-procedure arrow will determine which team will have the ball for a throw-in. The team which gains control of the jump will start the alternating procedure. The arrow is immediately set pointing toward the opponent’s basket. The alternating procedure can also be established by a violation or foul prior to control of the jump ball. Once established, the alternating procedure is used for the jump ball resulting from a held ball, an out-of-bounds situation where the officials cannot agree on who caused the ball to go out of bounds, a double violation, or when the ball lodges between the backboard and ring or comes to rest on the flange. (6-4)

Each overtime period begins with a jump ball, and therefore the arrow is SET once possession is established.

If you have Technical fouls that would start the extra period, the ball given to the offended team on the throw-in starts the Alternating Procedure Process.

Peace

Great point JRutledge.

... and not on the disposal for technical foul free throws.

No rebounders, no setting the arrow.

There are situations where there would be free throw rebounders to start the overtime (and thus setting the arrow), common foul with bonus free throws before possession (control) occurred during the overtime jump ball.
