Correctable Error Situation

Girls Varsity, NFHS.

Team A has 5 team fouls, 3rd quarter. They commit their 6th. The crew takes note. While the ball is in play, the scoreboard flips the team foul count from 6 back to 5. Team A then commits another common foul. The crew stops and asks the table whether that's 6 or 7. The table says it's 6, we play on. Fast forward to end of Q3. There were several made baskets in the interim. The table now calls the R over and says that foul #6 was actually foul #7. The crew determines we're outside the timeframe to correct the error, so Team A "got away with one".

Let's say, hypothetically, that we were within the timeframe. What would the crew do if they couldn't remember or figure out who the shooter should be to correct the error?

Give the player that was fouled the one and one, with the lane cleared. After the free-throws, use POI (point of interruption) for the resumption of play. (give the ball back to the team that had the possession when the error was discovered.)

2-3. Ask the table for help. Maybe go to stats, if available. Finally, ask the coach. Then, after the game, watch the video and if the coach lied, write a report to the state.

A dishonest home table will always be the bane of the correctable error rule, no matter how diligently the opponent is keeping their own book.

Thing is, it was the home team that would have been shooting the bonus if the table had gotten it right!

Gotta love it when the home timer/scorer makes mistakes that cost the home team...a lot better than costing the visiting team. The coach can't be mad at anyone but their own.

I had a similar situation a few years ago where team A was a big underdog and had the ball with a chance to win with about 12 seconds to go. Off a throwin in one corner, the ball is passed around the perimeter heading towards the other corner. The clock doesn't start. After about 3 seconds I crack the whistle since we have no clock. Next pass goes to the corner where the player drains a 3....but the ball was already dead before he got the pass.

The coach complained. I simply told the coach that it was his clock that messed up and he could address it with them. The timer was the brother of the AD...I'm sure the next family dinner was interesting.
