Fun With A Pivot Toe …

IAABO Make The Call Video

https://storage.googleapis.com/refqu...A%2FSYdQ%3D%3D

Was this a legal move? Did the shooter move her pivot in excess of prescribed limits?

Two choices: This is a traveling violation. This is a legal play.

My comment: This is a legal play. When ball handler Red #4 picks up her dribble, both feet are on the floor. She picks up her left foot, making her right foot her pivot foot. She then picks up her right pivot foot but doesn’t return it to the floor before releasing a try for goal.

Right foot is pivot foot. I don't see any illegal movement of it.

Agree. I confused left and right. Fixed it. Thanks.

Just a common., legal, step-through move.

The fact that her pivot foot was partially lifted, while her toes stayed "nailed" to the floor, made this look "weird", and unfortunately, for some, "weird" means travel.

Pretty hard to pivot without lifting the back of one's foot.

Including her upward body motion, done twice, this legal move was to the nth degree.

Great move. It amazes me that she was able to legally keep her pivot toe down. Nails? Glue?

Hope she doesn't "fool" some officials who think "weird" is travel.

Even so, she's allowed to pick up her pivot foot entirely, so officials should not be caught off guard just because a player partially lifted their foot.

I also have the right foot as the pivot and the angle we get it does not look like it moves.

Peace

Also amazing that the pivot toe didn't even slide (a travel), not even a fraction of an inch. Nailed? Glued?

IAABO Survey Says …

Disclaimer: Below is not a NFHS interpretation, it's only an IAABO interpretation which obviously doesn't mean a hill of beans to most members of this Forum.

https://storage.googleapis.com/refqu...A%2FSYdQ%3D%3D

IAABO Play Commentary Correct Answer: This is a legal play.

Sometimes players make awkward and unusual moves. We officials have to be disciplined to "find the pivot foot "and officiate the play based on the rule and not how the play appears.

In this play, the ball handler ends her dribble with her right foot in contact with the floor. When she steps toward the sideline, she places her left foot on the floor. When this occurs, this establishes her right foot as the pivot foot. (4-44-2.b.1) The ball handler then lifts her foot a second time by lifting her left foot and stepping toward the basket. She then lifts her pivot foot off the floor and then releases the ball on a try.

The pivot may be lifted, but not returned to the floor before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal. (4-44-3.a) In this play, the ball handler released the ball before the pivot foot returned to the floor, making this a legal play.

Here is the breakdown of the IAABO members that commented on the video: This is a legal play 89% (including me). This is a traveling violation 11%.
